Discover Veracruz: Archaeology, Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Veracruz
Veracruz offers several perspectives on history and nature: archaeological structures and settlements, museums, a Spanish colonial town on a river, jungle areas and a coral reef system. The variety of sites, collections and landscapes makes it interesting to choose what to explore. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding first whether archaeology, cultural history or nature matters most to you; this priority can also shape your search for a holiday rental and a suitable base.
Archaeological Sites and Finds
El Tajín is in the state of Veracruz. The Pyramid of the Niches is considered a masterpiece of ancient Mexican and American architecture. At Cempoala, the Great Pyramid is among the most important structures; it is also called the Temple of the Sun. If you are planning your trip around architectural themes, you can use these specific structures as starting points for your own selection.
Tres Zapotes also offers a distinctive perspective on Olmec history. The ancient settlement existed at the same time as La Venta and is associated with colossal stone heads. It extends for more than three kilometres along the Arroyo Hueyapan. A famous stele bears the date 3-IX-32 BC; this is the second-earliest date recorded in Mesoamerica. The Museo de Sitio de Tres Zapotes displays Estela C, described as the oldest stele in Mesoamerica.
The historic landscape is also part of this archaeological perspective: San Lorenzo Tenochtitlan developed on a tropical island bounded by navigable rivers and extensive floodplains in the lower basin of the Río Coatzacoalcos.
Museums, Cityscape and Tradition
The Museo de Antropología de Xalapa houses archaeological artefacts from cultures that settled in what is now the state of Veracruz during the pre-Hispanic period. The museum invites visitors to discover and experience more than 30 centuries of pre-Hispanic history in Mexico and around the world. The collection thus combines regional cultural history with a broader perspective on the past.
The Museo de Sitio de San Lorenzo Tenochtitlan offers a different focus: its collection comprises 87 objects from the archaeological zone of San Lorenzo Tenochtitlan. At the Museo Fuerte de San Juan de Ulúa, archaeological objects from the Olmec, Totonac and Huastec cultures are displayed alongside exhibitions on military history. There, you can explore the fort’s cells, passageways, dungeons and courtyards.
Tlacotalpan offers another point of interest. The city is a Spanish colonial town and river port on Mexico’s Gulf Coast; its urban layout and architecture bring together Spanish and Caribbean traditions. The Voladores ritual is also part of its cultural identity: a fertility dance particularly associated with the Totonac people of eastern Veracruz.
Jungle Areas and Coral Reef
The Los Tuxtlas Biosphere Reserve preserves the state of Veracruz’s last representative jungle areas. The Sistema Arrecifal Veracruzano National Park offers a different perspective on nature: it is the largest coral reef system in the Gulf of Mexico. These two themes offer distinct experiences: jungle areas on land and a large reef system in the sea.
When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to set a clear priority: should your trip focus mainly on archaeological sites and museums, architectural history or nature? Choose a location based on the places you want to visit. If you want to combine different interests, you can weigh up which themes should take priority.
