Veracruz: City History, Museums and Leisure Beaches

Veracruz brings together historic cityscapes, museums and leisure beaches. In the historic zone of the city and port, a 17th-century street plan and colonial-era streets shape its cultural character; there are also exhibitions on pre-Hispanic history and experiences at the aquarium. Historic Zone and the La Huaca Neighborhood

On March 1, 2004, the city and port of Veracruz were declared a historic monuments zone. The historic zone covers 1.5 km² and 170 city blocks, with historic buildings dating from the 16th to the 20th century. Its 17th-century street plan and numerous colonial-era streets give the city’s history a tangible presence. The zone includes the Zócalo, also known as Plaza de Armas, as well as other squares, parks and gardens. Those interested in historic urban spaces will find different aspects of this heritage here, from the preserved street plan to individual buildings.

Historic courtyards recognized by INAH have been preserved in the La Huaca neighborhood. The neighborhood keeps gastronomic and cultural traditions such as the Festival de la Gorda and the Picada alive. Its identity is also linked to two well-known figures: La Huaca is considered the birthplace of Agustín Lara and Toña la Negra. The neighborhood thus offers a different way to experience Veracruz than its monuments and museum collections, shaped by courtyards, traditions and cultural life.

Bastions and Collections on History

Baluarte de Santiago is the only surviving section of Veracruz’s former city wall and was built in 1635. The Museo Baluarte de Santiago also displays “Las joyas del pescador”: a significant collection of pre-Hispanic goldwork recovered by a fisherman from Veracruz. The focus here is therefore both on a surviving part of the former fortifications and on goldwork from the pre-Hispanic period.

The Museo Fuerte de San Juan de Ulúa brings together a variety of historical themes. Its permanent exhibition, “Las culturas del Golfo,” features 266 pre-Hispanic objects. Visitors can also explore cells, passageways, dungeons and courtyards. The exhibits include weapons from the 16th to the 19th century, including armor. The Museo Naval México has its own focus: across 28 halls, it displays more than 1,700 objects. Visitors can explore the various exhibition areas and learn about the history and duties of the Mexican Navy. A Discovery Room is designed specifically for young museum visitors; the museum also has a navigation simulator. This allows a visit focused on collections to be complemented by an area for young guests and a simulation.

Aquarium and Leisure Beaches

At the Aquarium del Puerto de Veracruz, guided experiences take center stage alongside the animal exhibits. A guided encounter with penguins is offered, focusing on their care and behavior. There is also a supervised activity that involves getting in the water with sharks. The aquarium is located in the Zona Playón de Hornos. These experiences appeal to visitors who would like to add animal encounters to their stay.

For a different focus, consider the leisure beaches of Regatas, Villa del Mar and Martí.
