Puente Jula: Bridge, Water and San Miguel
Accommodation in Puente Jula
Puente Jula is defined by its historic bridge and the Arroyo Jula: the stream flows year-round through the middle arch, while the side arches remain partly dry. The structure was built in 1809 in what is now the town. Its design, water, and festival traditions give travelers different ways to get to know the place.
Reading the bridge as a structure
On the west side, the bridge has three round arches. From left to right, their spans are 5.10, 10, and 4.60 meters. The middle arch is therefore the widest; the two outer arches also differ slightly. Their sequence makes the structure’s varying dimensions tangible.
The bridge uses the same architectural design that engineer Diego García Conde drew up in 1798 for the bridges del Rey, Copal, Paso de Ovejas, and San Juan. Puente Jula can thus be compared with four other named bridges, although the structures need not look alike: what they share is García Conde’s design.
The two sides of the bridge also tell different parts of its story. The side facing away from the town has retained more of its 19th-century appearance because no structural alterations have been made there. The modern, six-meter-wide roadway was built on the side facing the town and connects the bridgeheads to the sidewalk.
A lower sluice gate regulates the water flow. The roadway allows people and vehicles to cross safely to the other side and provides access to the gas station on Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Street, which opened in 2000. As the condition of the site may change, check before your visit.
The Arroyo Jula and its seasonal character
The Arroyo Jula flows through the middle arch, while the side arches remain partly dry. Water levels can vary by season. During the rainy season, extensive reed beds grow in the channel beside Puente Jula. The watercourse and vegetation offer two different ways to experience the landscape: the year-round flow through the middle arch and the seasonal reeds along the channel.
San Miguel in September
Puente Jula celebrates its patron saint, San Miguel Arcángel, every September. A report from September 2025 listed a traditional ribbon-cutting, the procession of the festival queen, fairground dances, and fireworks among the events for the 2025 celebration, held from September 25 to 29. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates and events in advance.
In 2021 and 2022, a cycling pilgrimage took children, young people, and adults from Veracruz Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción to the parish in Puente Jula. These documented years do not predict when the ride will take place again. If it matters to your travel plans, check in advance whether it is being offered.
Choosing Puente Jula as a vacation destination
When looking for a vacation rental in Puente Jula, you can first consider the purpose of your stay: are you especially interested in the historic bridge and the Arroyo Jula, or would you like to travel around the September festival? The structure and watercourse offer historical and seasonal themes; for the festival, confirmed dates are what matter.
