Sauce and Lago Sauce: Water, Forest and Discoveries
Accommodation in Sauce
Lago Sauce lies on the shore of the town of Sauce at an elevation of 650 m and is also known as Laguna Azul. Kayaking and swimming in the lake are among the activities available, alongside walks and trekking around Lago Sauce. This makes Sauce a place to combine time on the water with outdoor activities on land. If you are looking for a vacation rental in Sauce, you can consider whether your trip will focus mainly on the lake, the trails nearby, or a visit to Ecoparque La Soñada.
The Lake and Nearby Trails
Lago Sauce is located in the buffer zone of Cordillera Azul National Park. The Pucayacu Waterfalls are also in its buffer zone. They are in Caserío La Primavera, about an hour from the district of Sauce. The walk from La Primavera to the waterfalls takes 30 minutes and follows a trail. The route passes through humid tropical premontane forest. If you would like to include a hike alongside your time at the lake, Pucayacu offers a different landscape and a specific trail distance to use as a guide.
Access to Lago Sauce is described as part of a route from Puerto López on the banks of the Huallaga River. It includes crossing the river by ferry or raft (balsa): the crossing is 200 m long and is listed as taking 20 minutes. This crossing is part of the approach along the route described; it is separate from the walking and trekking opportunities around the lake.
Getting Around on and Around Lago Sauce
Canoes, rowboats and motorized aluminum boats are used for transport on Lago Sauce. Kayaking is also possible on the lake, and swimming is another listed activity. You can camp on the shore in the 2 de Mayo sector. This offers different ways to spend time by the water: an activity on the lake, swimming, or a stay on the shore.
Tours at Ecoparque La Soñada
Ecoparque La Soñada is in the El Caño sector, next to the outlet of Laguna Azul in Sauce. For the night tour, the trip begins at Sauce’s main dock. Participants travel by boat to the Ecoparque, accompanied by a guide, and use flashlights to observe nocturnal animals in the forest. This guided tour offers a way to discover the forest at night and is quite different from a daytime walk or trek.
The Ecoparque’s full-day tour combines several stops and activities. It includes a visit to the “Hijos de Nuestra Tierra” exhibition, the Mina de Sal Rosada Amazónica and the Jardín de las Orquídeas. A chocolate workshop and a kayaking tour on the lagoon are also included. If you add this tour to your trip, it offers a different focus from a stay centered on swimming, camping or exploring the trails around the lake independently. The listed stops give the full-day tour its thematic variety, spanning an exhibition, a salt mine, an orchid garden, chocolate and kayaking.
The name Laguna Sauce also appears in the “Ruta Laguna Sauce” list for San Martín and Sauce. Together with the name Laguna Azul, it reflects the different names by which the lake is known.
