Sauce: Laguna Azul, Waterfalls and Thermal Pools
Accommodation in Sauce
Lago Sauce, also known as Laguna Azul, lies on the shore of the town of Sauce. The lake and the other destinations mentioned are quite different: Alongside the water, there is a hiking trail to Cascadas Pucayacu, thermal pools, an exhibition and a nighttime boat excursion. This lets you choose different focuses for your trip to Sauce, rather than treating all the experiences as one single type of excursion.
Lake and Waterfalls in the Buffer Zone
Lago Sauce lies in the buffer zone of Cordillera Azul National Park. Cascadas Pucayacu is also located in this buffer zone. Their shared location describes the natural area, but not the same place to visit: the waterfalls are in Caserío La Primavera in the district of Sauce, while Lago Sauce lies on the shore of the town of Sauce. If you plan your days around specific destinations, this distinction can help you find your way.
Caserío La Primavera is the starting point for the walk to Cascadas Pucayacu. From there, a hiking trail leads to the waterfalls; the walk takes 30 minutes. This visit therefore has a different character from experiences around the lake or the offerings at Termales Don Grimaldo. If you want to include the waterfalls in your plans, you can factor the named starting point and stated walking time into your day.
Thermal Pools, Exhibition and Night Excursion
Termales Don Grimaldo, a thermal spa for relaxation, is located in the district of Sauce. Access to thermal pools is offered there. The offerings also include a tour featuring medicinal black healing mud; handcrafted welcome drinks round them out. These specific features give the visit a different focus from the walk to the waterfalls.
Ecoparque La Soñada’s full-day tour combines a visit to the Hijos de Nuestra Tierra exhibition with the rest of the tour. Ecoparque also offers a nighttime boat excursion departing from Sauce, during which visitors search for nocturnal animals. The exhibition and the excursion appeal to different interests: one involves a visit to an exhibition, while the other is designed as a nighttime search on the water. A tourism project also supported the community-based tourism enterprise Dos de Mayo.
Lago Lindo and Choosing a Focus
Lago Lindo lies at the southern end of Laguna Azul. The area around Lago Lindo is a habitat for the shansho. The properties adjoining Lago Lindo are private and are considered a private ecotourism reserve. These features of the area add another connection with nature to the experiences at the lake, the trail to the waterfalls and the offerings at Termales Don Grimaldo.
Sauce is the stated starting point for the nighttime boat excursion; Caserío La Primavera is the starting point for the walk to Cascadas Pucayacu. When comparing the options described, keep these different reference points in mind. The town of Sauce provides a connection to Lago Sauce, which is also known as Laguna Azul.
