San Pedro brings together a nearby archaeological site and cultural themes related to water, community, and agriculture. Chillwamarka provides the specific historical connection; the Fiesta del Agua and the title of a district fair approved for 2025 add local traditions. For planning purposes, it is helpful to treat visiting the archaeological complex and checking event dates as two separate travel decisions.

Chillwamarka near San Pedro

Chillwamarka, also known as Ñaupallaccta in the district of San Pedro, is a pre-Inca urban complex in the vicinity of the destination. The site covers approximately 36 hectares, lies at an elevation of about 3,400 m, and is around 500 m from the annex of Santa Isabel. Its area conveys its scale, while the elevation and distance put the site in context. The remains include circular buildings, palaces, and dwellings of the Chillwamarkas; these different architectural forms make its character as an urban complex tangible. Ñaupallaccta means “old village” and adds a local name alongside Chillwamarka.

Route to the archaeological zone

The route from Plaza San Pedro to the archaeological zone has two stages. Take a combi for approximately 3.6 km, about 15 minutes, to Santa Isabel; from there, it is around 550 m, or about 10 minutes on foot, to Chillwamarka. Since the time estimates apply to different modes of transport, treat them as separate stages when planning. Distances and times are approximate; confirm the connection locally before adding it to your itinerary.

Culture and festival traditions in the district

The municipality of San Pedro promotes the tourist corridor of the San Pedro district. This broadens the focus beyond the specific archaeological site to a wider municipal perspective on tourism in the district.

A bill in 2025 sought to declare the festival “Sequia Tusuy – Fiesta del agua” in the district of San Pedro, Lucanas Province, Ayacucho Department, a national intangible cultural heritage. The proposal describes it as an expression of Andean ideas about water, reciprocity (ayni), community organization, and the agricultural cycle. In this cultural interpretation, water therefore does not stand alone, but is connected with community and the rhythms of agriculture.

The XXIX Feria Distrital Agropecuaria, Agroindustrial, Gastronómica, Artesanal, Folklórica San Pedro was approved for 2025. Its official title names agriculture, agroindustry, gastronomy, crafts, and folklore, bringing together several economic and cultural areas. The approval applies to this edition. If you want to plan your trip around an event, check the specific dates in advance.

San Pedro as a base

You can use your itinerary to help choose a vacation rental. If Chillwamarka is on your itinerary, consider San Pedro as the starting point for the route described. If your trip centers on the Feria or the Fiesta del Agua, check the specific event dates before deciding on your accommodation dates. This highlights two practical considerations: your preferred starting point for the archaeological leg and the right travel period for cultural events. A municipal tourist information office is located at Avenida José María Arguedas No. 344; check its opening arrangements locally before planning to visit.
