Huanta combines a plaza steeped in history with views of the city and its surroundings, a nearby river valley, and a distinctive culinary tradition. If you’re looking for a vacation rental here, you can plan your days around a city walk, culture, and experiences in the surrounding area.

History and greenery around the plaza

The Plaza de Armas de Huanta is part of Peru’s national cultural heritage and is designated an “Ambiente Urbano Monumental.” Its history dates back to 1852. The Iglesia San Pedro Matriz de Huanta, dating from 1724, stands on the plaza. The original structure of the church has been preserved in the Capilla del Rosario, which is also its oldest part. The fountain also reflects several years of construction: work began in 1862 and was completed in 1869.

Palm trees, Pati trees, and jacarandas are part of the plaza’s character, while retama blossoms shape its appearance. Nearby, the 150 m² Parque de Amílcar Gamarra features a life-size statue of Huanta-born artist Héctor Amílcar Gamarra Altamirano. The plaza and the park offer different points of interest if, during a visit to the city, you’d like to explore local heritage as well as architecture.

City walks and viewpoints

The Óvalo de la Madre Huantina is part of the traditional city walk through Huanta. Another stop just a short distance from the plaza is the sculpture El Obispo de Piedra Santiago Ophelan: it is about 50 meters away, or roughly a three-minute walk. These details help you place the two sites in relation to the plaza without prescribing a particular order for the walk.

For views over Huanta and its surroundings, the Mirador de la ciudad offers a panorama. A municipal planning document for 2020–2025 estimates the mototaxi ride there from the main square at about ten minutes; this is a guideline, and travel time may change. This means you can complement a day spent visiting historic sites in the city with a viewpoint, without equating the two experiences.

The river valley and nearby nature

The Valle de Huanta is about ten minutes from the main plaza. Visitors can take boat trips along the river there; operating conditions may vary. Near the Valle, Recreos campestres serve typical local cuisine made with regional produce. Individual establishments may change, so this culinary tip is mainly an indication of the area’s character, not a guarantee about any particular business.

The Cascada de Occochaca is also in the vicinity of Huanta. The waterfall is about 40 meters high. A family museum preserves archaeological finds discovered in the area around the waterfall. If you’re planning to visit the museum, check current visiting options in advance.

Local cuisine and a convenient location

You’ll find another culinary specialty in the traditional Barrio de 5 Esquinas: most of the shops that sell traditional Chicha 7 semillas are located there. The offerings at individual shops may change. Together with the cuisine at the Recreos campestres, this offers a contrast between a stroll through the traditional neighborhood and an outing to the area around the Valle.

These different points of interest can help you choose a vacation rental in Huanta. If you mainly want to explore the plaza, church, and city walk, focus your search on locations that are convenient for those routes. If you’re also planning mototaxi rides to the Mirador or outings to the Valle, compare the property’s exact location with the places you want to visit. That way, you can choose a base that suits your planned mix of city history, views, river scenery, and regional cuisine.
