San Juan is one of the most populated places in Nepeña District. Other topics in Nepeña District include the archaeological structures at Pañamarca, the spring pool in La Grama, and the San Juan archaeological site with Sectors A and B. Culture and water offer distinct points of interest. When looking for a vacation rental, it helps to distinguish San Juan as a settlement from the other attractions in the district. You can then first decide whether architecture and history or a water-related focus better suits your trip.

Archaeological structures at Pañamarca

The Pañamarca archaeological site is located in Nepeña District. It was declared a Cultural Heritage of the Nation on August 12, 2003, by Resolución Directoral Nacional n.º 581/INC-2003. The site comprises three pyramid-shaped structures built for ceremonial and defensive purposes. This offers two ways to consider Pañamarca: its architectural form and the purposes the structures served. The pyramid shape draws attention to the architecture, while ceremonial and defensive uses represent distinct functions. Those interested in cultural history can understand the site not only through its structures but also through their purpose. Its declaration as Cultural Heritage gives this archaeological attraction a clear historical context.

The water pool at Manantial Puquio Pipi

Another point of interest is Manantial Puquio Pipi in La Grama, also in Nepeña District. Picnics with family meals and swimming are among the main activities at the spring pool. The pool is approximately 40 meters long, about 5 meters wide, and just over 1 meter deep; a rustic modern structure reinforces it. The approximate measurements give a clear sense of the pool’s shape: it is considerably longer than it is wide and is a little over a meter deep. The focus here is on water, which sets it apart from Pañamarca’s archaeological structures. If you include Puquio Pipi in your travel plans, check access before visiting.

Protection and orientation at the San Juan site

Nepeña District is also home to the San Juan archaeological site, Sectors A and B, which should not be confused with the settlement of San Juan. These sectors were given provisional protection for two years. An extension is possible with appropriate justification. The protection measure published in September 2026 also provided for the installation of information signs and boundary markers in coordination with the Nepeña municipal administration. The focus here is therefore on temporary protection and planned visitor orientation. This is a different archaeological attraction from Pañamarca, with its pyramid-shaped structures and declaration as Cultural Heritage of the Nation.

When choosing a vacation rental in San Juan District, consider which focus matters most for your trip. Pañamarca is known for its architectural forms and cultural heritage; the San Juan site for provisional protection and planned markers; and Puquio Pipi for picnics and its water pool. You can use these distinctions as a first filter when planning your holiday, then choose the location of your accommodation based on your itinerary.
