Ancash is a destination for anyone who wants to discover high-mountain landscapes and archaeological history in one region. Glacial lakes and trekking routes sit alongside the sites of Chavín and Chankillo. The experiences on offer are very different: from a boat trip and hikes around lagoons to a challenging, multi-day summit climb. When planning your holiday rental, you can first consider whether nature and outdoor activities or archaeological culture should shape your stay.

Mountain Lakes and Glacial Landscapes

Parque Nacional Huascarán covers 340,000 hectares and reaches up to 27 snow-capped peaks above 6,000 metres. Laguna Chinancocha lies in the national park, in a glacial valley between Nevado Huascarán and Huandoy. Here, you can go boating or hike the Chinancocha educational trail. This means you can choose between an activity on the water and one on foot at the same lake.

Laguna Parón is the largest lake in Parque Nacional Huascarán. It was formed by the melting glaciers of Nevados Caraz, Artezonraju, Huandoy, Paria, Pirámide, Chacraraju and Pisco. Hiking, landscape observation and camping are all possible at Laguna Parón. Together with the options at Chinancocha, this gives you a choice between boating and an educational trail on the one hand, and hiking, nature observation and camping on the other.

Laguna 69 also reveals another side of this mountain landscape. It lies in the Yungay District and was formed by the melting of Nevado Chacraraju. Its name points to a specific natural destination whose formation is linked to the glacier; its location in the Yungay District also provides a geographical reference point within Ancash.

Hiking and Trekking for Different Lengths of Time

A trail to Laguna 69 starts at Cebolla Pampa; the hike can be completed in one day. A different option is the Santa Cruz–Huaripampa trekking circuit, which crosses Punta Unión Pass at an elevation of 4,750 metres and reaches Huaripampa Gorge. Hiking and camping are possible along the route. These examples differ in their described routes and in the time frame for the Laguna 69 hike.

Ice climbing is a tourist activity on Nevado Alpamayo. The summit climb takes an average of six to eight days and requires sufficient experience as well as professional mountain guides for this challenging tour. Ancash therefore offers very different ways to get around: a hike that can be completed in one day, a trekking circuit with camping, and a multi-day summit climb with clear requirements for experience and guidance.

Archaeological Sites and Architecture

The archaeological site of Chavín in Huari Province was a ceremonial centre and pilgrimage centre in the Andean religious world. Its architecture includes buildings made of dressed stone and artificial terraces around plazas. Inside, a gallery system extends through a complex network of ventilation shafts and drainage channels. Its monumental stone sculpture includes the Chavín Lanzón, the Raimondi Stela, the Tello Obelisk, the Falconidae Portico, the Circular Plaza and the tenon heads. Religious significance, architectural design and stone sculpture offer different historical perspectives on the site.

The Chankillo archaeoastronomical complex lies in Casma Province. Its solar observatory consists of thirteen towers aligned from north to south along a hill. They track the annual course of the sun, including the solstices and equinoxes. Chankillo is a Cultural Heritage Site of the Nation, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2021, and is recognised as the oldest solar observatory in the Americas. In contrast to Chavín’s religious and architectural themes, the focus here is on observing the course of the sun.

Which priorities suit your holiday rental search?

When searching for a holiday rental in Ancash, it helps to first sort out the experiences you want. If you prioritise mountain lakes and hikes, you can look to the lagoons and routes mentioned here; Chavín and Chankillo offer different themes for your trip if you want to focus on history. The examples also vary in activity level: the hike to Laguna 69 can be completed in one day, while the climb at Alpamayo takes an average of six to eight days and requires experience and professional mountain guides. Tailor your search to the places that matter for your plans, rather than treating the different experiences as a single route.
