In Parque Nacional Pali Aike, low volcanic cones and basaltic lava flows shape an extensive volcanic field in the municipality of San Gregorio. This landscape forms a striking contrast with the forests and peat bogs of Reserva Nacional Magallanes in the municipality of Punta Arenas. When choosing destinations for a stay, you can first consider whether volcanic formations, hiking trails or protected waters appeal most to you.

Volcanic Field, Forests and Waters

In Reserva Nacional Magallanes, deciduous Magellanic forests, mixed Magellanic forests and peat bogs are part of the landscape. Reserva Nacional Laguna Parrillar protects the hydrographic basin of Laguna Parrillar, the Río San Juan and the streams that flow into the lagoon. This protected waterscape also includes hiking trails for outings. The municipality of Punta Arenas therefore brings together different natural features: forest and peat bog in Reserva Nacional Magallanes, and watercourses and a lagoon in Reserva Nacional Laguna Parrillar.

Hiking Trails and Practical Information

Reserva Nacional Magallanes has more than 60 kilometres of interpretive and recreational hiking trails. In Parque del Estrecho, easy hiking trails pass through forests of Magellanic coihue and lenga. A modern visitor centre there offers panoramic views of the Estrecho de Magallanes, Puerto del Hambre and Tierra del Fuego. These experiences offer different highlights: an extensive trail network, easy forest walks, or a visit with views of the landscape and its named places.

Access to Parque Nacional Pali Aike is via international road 255-CH. The main route includes 168 kilometres of concrete road and 28 kilometres of gravel road. The park has hiking trails, a visitor information centre and public toilets. Road conditions and specific operating arrangements may change; check current information before planning your drive and visit.

Islands, History and Food

Monumento Natural Los Pingüinos comprises the islands of Magdalena and Marta in the Estrecho de Magallanes. Approximately 7,000 pairs of Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) breed on Isla Magdalena; this is an approximate figure and may change. The islands and the approximate population give this protected area a different profile from the forest and hiking destinations.

In the historic centre of Punta Arenas, Museo Regional de Magallanes presents a historical exhibition on human settlement in the southern territory up to the consolidation of the city. Parque del Estrecho also has a historical focus: Fuerte Bulnes is presented there as a historical reconstruction associated with the 19th century. The two themes offer different ways to explore history—one through the settlement of the southern territory, the other through a reconstructed fort.

For a taste of local cuisine, a SERNATUR description dated 15 July 2021 mentions the food stalls at Mercado Municipal de Punta Arenas and Patagonian dishes such as congrio and empanadas with king crab and cheese. The date applies to this description; it does not establish current opening hours or availability.

Choose a Holiday Rental Based on Your Travel Interests

When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to first sort out which experiences you want. If Pali Aike’s volcanic field is the main focus, San Gregorio is the place name to use for further planning; the route described is via road 255-CH. If you are particularly interested in the museum and market cuisine, you can focus your search on Punta Arenas. The municipality of the same name is also home to Reserva Nacional Magallanes and Reserva Nacional Laguna Parrillar. Then decide whether hiking trails, natural and waterscapes, or history and food should shape your trip most.
