Antártica Chilena Province
Accommodation in Antártica Chilena Province
Antártica Chilena Province combines challenging treks on Isla Navarino with protected landscapes and trips to Antarctica. The experiences differ considerably: Dientes de Navarino takes several days through difficult terrain, while Antarctic programs are reached by plane or expedition ship. So if you’re looking for a vacation rental, it helps to first consider which part of the trip you want to focus on.
Dientes de Navarino: a multi-day trek
Dientes de Navarino is considered the world’s southernmost trekking circuit and is one of South America’s most challenging treks. The hike is planned to take four to five days. Difficult terrain, loose rock, snow, and peat bogs shape the challenges along the way. This makes it a very different kind of trip from a short outing: if you’re planning it, take the multi-day duration and the terrain conditions described into account when choosing your activities.
The trail starts in Puerto Williams, two kilometers from town, beyond the bridge over the Río Róbalo. Hikers must register with the Carabineros de Chile both at the beginning and at the end of the trek. These specific details are important for planning: registration is part of the trek, and the starting point is not simply the town center.
Forests, coastlines, and wildlife
In Parque Nacional Cabo de Hornos, low-growing forests of Magellan’s beech (Nothofagus betuloides) alternate with Magellanic tundra, shrub formations, and narrow coastal grasslands. In the park’s marine environments, visitors may spot leopard seals (Hydrurga leptonyx), whales, sea lions, elephant seals, chungungos (Lontra felina), as well as Peale’s or Antarctic dolphins and Chilean dolphins. The national park is located in the Archipiélago Wollaston and was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve on June 29, 2005.
Parque Nacional Yendegaia also offers a distinctive natural setting: species found there include culpeo foxes (Lycalopex culpaeus), Magellanic woodpeckers (Campephilus magellanicus), kelp gulls (Larus dominicanus), and southern giant petrels (Macronectes giganteus). Access is by sea from Puerto Williams or via Route Y-85, which leads overland to Lago Fagnano in Tierra del Fuego. At the same time, the park currently has neither visitor services nor infrastructure for public use. This is an important distinction if you expect designated services or facilities when you visit.
Yagán history and knowledge
The Ruta Patrimonial Bahía Wulaia is approximately 56 kilometers long and is connected with 7,000 years of history and use by the Yagán people. Traditional ecological knowledge is also central to Parque Etnobotánico Omora, which particularly promotes the preservation of Yagán knowledge. Omora is on Isla Navarino, three kilometers west of Puerto Williams. Museo Antropológico Martín Gusinde complements this cultural perspective with an important ethnographic collection that preserves the natural and cultural heritage of the Fuegian Archipelago.
Those wishing to visit Puerto Toro can do so on the last Sunday of each month, but must register in advance at the Oficina del Vecino office in Puerto Williams. Together, the museum, Omora, and the historic Ruta Patrimonial offer different ways to learn about the region and its history.
Trips to Antarctica: plane or ship
There are different ways to travel on expeditions to Antártica Chilena. Expedition cruise ships depart from Punta Arenas and travel through the Strait of Magellan and the Drake Passage to the Antarctic Peninsula. The crossing takes several days; because space is limited, early reservations are required. Expedition flights, on the other hand, land at Teniente Marsh Airfield (TNM) at Frei Base on King George Island. The flight takes about two hours and must be booked through a tour operator.
The Full Day Antártica program is accessible only by charter flight from Punta Arenas. It is subject to weather conditions and strict regulations. The program includes guided hikes to observe gentoo and Adélie penguins and Weddell seals. Weather permitting, it also includes a Zodiac trip to Collins Glacier or Ardley Island. Expeditions to observe elephant seals, penguins, and Weddell seals are also offered in Antártica Chilena. These travel options differ in both how you get there and how long they take: a multi-day ship journey is not the same as the one-day charter flight program.
Visits and starting points
Parque Nacional Cabo de Hornos can be reached from Punta Arenas by sea. Another option is to fly to Puerto Williams and continue by sea. There is a small landing dock in the park; a footpath leads from there to Faro Hornos. The park was declared a Biosphere Reserve and also offers a clear point of reference for anyone interested in the coastal landscape and marine wildlife.
To explore the area and its attractions, see Cabo de Hornos. When looking for accommodation, choosing a starting point is a useful first step: Dientes de Navarino starts near Puerto Williams, while the Full Day program and expedition cruises depart from Punta Arenas. Focus your vacation rental search on the type of trip you actually plan to take.
