Diernæs: Beach, Trails and History
Accommodation in Diernæs
Discover Diernæs from different perspectives: the beach on Diernæs Bugt, hiking trails by Slivsø and the history of Sikringsstellung Nord. You can shape your stay around what interests you most – time by the water, exploring the landscape or learning about its history. When looking for a holiday home, it also helps to ask yourself: what would you like your stay to focus on?
Beach and bay
Diernæs Strand is on Diernæs Bugt and east of the Diernæs Strand holiday-home area. The beach has Blue Flag status. This location gives you a clear reference point when choosing where to stay with the beach and holiday-home area in mind. The bay and beach offer a distinct focus alongside the trails by the lake and the area’s historical sites.
Hiking on two scales
The Camino Haderslev Næs is 106 km long. The route is marked with wooden posts bearing the route logo, as well as small signs with the logo and arrows. Both types of markers – posts and arrow signs – help you find your way along the hiking route. Its length makes it a different proposition from a single short trail by the lake.
Closer to Diernæs, a trail about 3.5 km long runs along the north shore of Slivsø. It takes hikers close to the lake and its wildlife. The lengths of 106 km and about 3.5 km make the difference in scale between the two hiking options clear: a long hiking route on the one hand, and a lakeside trail on the other. You can decide whether to consider a longer hike or a shorter trail with a stated distance.
The shelter in Diernæs is located between Slivsøen and Diernæs Strand. Its location provides another spatial link between the lake and the beach, two different reference points when planning a stay in and around Diernæs.
On the water, on the lake and along the river
The route “Slivsø – via Hoptrup Å to Diernæs Bugt” follows the river downstream along Hoptrup Å to Diernæs Bugt. Closer to Diernæs, you can also go SUP on Slivsø, starting from the platform by the pump house. These are two different ways to include time on the water in your travel plans: a downstream route or SUP on the lake. Which interests you depends on whether you would rather follow a waterway or go SUP on Slivsø.
The history of Sikringsstilling Nord
Sikringsstilling Nord runs from Hoptrup, east of Diernæs, to Rømø in the west and is about 50 km long. The Imperial German Army built the fortifications in 1916–1917. Originally, they comprised about 900 bunkers, 40 batteries, flood-control installations, trenches and military railways for transporting supplies to the position.
The length and variety of features give a sense of the scale of this historic installation. Bunkers and batteries were only part of the original layout; it also included installations, trenches and railways for transporting supplies. For travellers interested in history, this offers a different way to experience Diernæs than through its beach, hiking trails or water sports: the extensive reach and original composition of Sikringsstilling Nord.
Find a holiday home to suit your travel interests
The location of the beach and the shelter between the lake and the beach help you place these reference points in relation to one another.
