Discover Råde: Beach, Fossils and Nature at the Little Belt
Råde combines a distinctive coastal landscape with special discoveries for nature-loving travellers. Råde Beach lies on the Little Belt south of the Årø Sound, while Råde Hoved is located where the Little Belt meets the Årøsund. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Råde can use their preferred focus for the holiday as a criterion for narrowing down the options.
Between Dunes, Dry Grassland and Water
The area near Råde Beach, managed by the Danish Nature Agency, is small, semi-arid and gently hilly. Its character is shaped by a mosaic of dry grassland areas as well as grey and green dunes covered in vegetation. As a result, the landscape does not appear as one uniform expanse of sand, but instead displays different forms and areas of vegetation within a compact setting. This change in scenery can be particularly interesting for families, as a visit to the beach here can be combined with observing the landscape and making small discoveries.
The surroundings of the holiday-home areas also have their own structure. The almost adjoining holiday-home areas of Råde and Flovt are separated by Råde Bæk. The terrain on both sides slopes down towards Råde Bæk.
Fossils at Råde Beach and Reefs at Råde Hoved
Fossil hunting is possible at Råde Beach. Fossilised sea urchins may be found there—a specific objective for travellers who like to combine a day at the beach with a small geological discovery. The search suits a holiday where not every activity has to be planned in advance, but nature experiences arise directly from the landscape.
There is also a municipal reef project at Råde Hoved. It includes an information reef close to the shore. Further out, the project envisages a larger, continuous, cave-forming reef approximately 550 metres long. The two areas have different emphases: the information reef provides a thematic introduction to the coastal environment, while the planned reef further out stands out through its size and shape. As this is a project, this distinction between the existing project component and the planned facility should be taken into account when making your own plans.
Hiking, Paddling and Fishing
The shelter in Råde By is located along the fifth stage of the Haderslev Næs Camino. The route is marked with wooden posts bearing the route logo, as well as small signs with the logo and arrows. This provides hikers with clear orientation along the stage. The Råde Beach Mini-Shelter “Havterne”, on the other hand, is limited to a maximum of three people and no more than two nights; it can be booked three months in advance.
At Råde Beach, the primitive overnight site serves canoes and kayaks as a landing place. Without a permit, it can be used free of charge for a maximum of two nights. There are no parking spaces in the immediate vicinity of this overnight site. Anyone booking accommodation in Råde and planning individual outdoor experiences should therefore distinguish between a holiday apartment, the basic overnight site and the mini-shelter, and take the respective conditions into account for their own trip.
Råde Hoved is also a fishing spot for sea trout. A valid fishing licence is required for fishing there. This makes this part of the area particularly suitable for travellers who want to combine their stay with a specific fishing goal. Together with the Camino, the canoe landing site and fossil hunting, this creates a varied setting without requiring all activities to be experienced in the same way.
