Holiday apartment in Haderslev Municipality: culture, nature and history

Haderslev Municipality offers a diverse combination of cultural history, protected nature, paths through forests and fields, water-based experiences, as well as regional markets and mills. Historic buildings are just as central as wildlife observation, canoe trips and exhibitions that reveal the region from different perspectives.

Culture and history

Haderslev’s historic district has been well preserved despite major fires in 1627 and 1759. Among its defining features are houses dating from the 16th century. Haderslev Cathedral contains some of the highest church vaults in the Nordic region and one of Denmark’s largest church organs. The cathedral welcomes visitors; guided tours can be arranged during opening hours.

The Ehlers Collection also reaches far back into the past: it is the largest collection of ceramics in Northern Europe and spans five centuries. It is housed in a restored building from 1577, which features some of Denmark’s finest and best-preserved wood panelling and ceiling paintings. The open-air museum of Arkæologi Haderslev includes historic farms and buildings from Southern Jutland, a rare post mill and prehistoric graves.

Arkæologi Haderslev was founded in 1887 after the discovery of two gold bowls from the Late Bronze Age, dating from around 500 BC. The exhibition in Fogeden Hus near Tørning Mølle offers another historical perspective. It covers the history of the site from the 13th century to 1597, as well as the development of the mills and the industrial mill from 1597 to the present day. Teatret Møllen has been operating in Haderslev since 1974 and stages around 120 performances each year for children and adults, both at the theatre and on tour.

Nature and trails

Pamhule Skov is protected as an EU Natura 2000 site. The Pamhule area also has an 11.1-kilometre mountain bike route through the hilly forest. A bird tower stands on the shore of Hindemade, offering opportunities to observe birdlife. In the first ten years after the restoration of Hindemade, 187 different bird species were observed there.

In Haderslev Dyrehave, there are around 200 fallow deer and 20 red deer in summer. The area around Nørskovgård and the path along Hindemade are accessible to wheelchair users. Thus, forest, wetland, wildlife observation and an accessible path are among the municipality’s clearly distinct landscape features.

Water and activities

The Camino Haderslev Næs connects nine churches in the region. The route passes through fields and forests along gravel paths, country roads and cycle paths, offering views of hills and water. On the Tørning Canal, you can canoe as far as Christiansdal and the canoe landing there.

The Haderslev Dambåd offers a different perspective on the water. It is an electrically powered, almost silent boat service with four stops; a round trip without getting off takes about an hour. The ferry to Aarø takes around seven to eight minutes and runs hourly. To reach the area around Nørskovgård, Sydtrafik bus route 239 from Haderslev bus station towards Over Jerstal stops at the Nørskovgårdvej stop.

Markets, mills and regional specialities

Sillerup Mølle is a working windmill. Visitors can see how grain is ground into flour and then turned into bread in the bakery, which they can also taste. Market days are held every Tuesday and Friday morning at Gravene market in Haderslev. The offerings include fresh fruit and vegetables, fish, eggs, sausages, cheese, flowers, handicrafts and antiques.

At Gram Slot, visitors can sample the Sønderjyske Kaffebord, take part in guided tours of the organic farm, see the animals in the mini zoo and taste organic products in the café. Thus, alongside museums and historic buildings, mills, market stalls, crafts, farming and regional food culture are also part of the municipality’s public range of experiences.
