Rivera can be explored through three distinctive themes: history at the Museo del Patrimonio Regional, Plaza Internacional as a symbol of unity between two countries, and the peaceful paths of Parque Gran Bretaña. The experience ranges from museum collections and architecture to observing nature in the park.

Museum History and Virtual Discoveries

The Museo del Patrimonio Regional dates back to 1946, when it was founded under the name Museo Histórico. Its collection includes newspapers from Rivera, photographs, historical and municipal documents, as well as archaeological and paleontological collections. This diversity brings together local written records with historical and natural history themes.

In 2019, the museum worked with Plan Ceibal to develop a virtual tour of Parque Gran Bretaña for primary and secondary school students.

The History and Details of Plaza Internacional

Plaza Internacional was proposed in 1923 by Virgilio Sampognaro, Uruguay’s chancellor, and Brazilian Marshal Botafogo as a symbol of unity between the two countries. It was inaugurated on February 26, 1943. Its history thus traces a path from an idea of unity to a recorded date of inauguration.

The obelisk at Plaza Internacional features a mosaic-like chain motif with 33 links and is topped by two clocks. Originally, the obelisk’s glass tip emitted a beam of light on the hour. Alongside the plaza’s historical significance, visitors can notice several concrete design elements: the chain motif, the clocks and its former lighting function.

Paths and Nature in Parque Gran Bretaña

Parque Gran Bretaña offers peaceful trails for hiking and walking, surrounded by native vegetation. Wildlife watching is also possible; the park is home to various plant and animal species. Alongside architecture and collections, this offers a different way to explore: paying attention to the paths, plants and animals.

A seasonal post from January 2024 mentions a designated swimming area, barbecue facilities and restrooms in the park. Check the latest information about these facilities before your visit. When planning your outing, it is helpful to combine this practical guidance with the experience of nature: in addition to walking along the peaceful paths, wildlife watching is another activity mentioned at the park.

Landscape and History in the Wider Rivera Destination

Within the wider Rivera destination, the protected landscape of Valle del Lunarejo encompasses grasslands, hills and ravines with steep slopes covered in native forest. It also features caves, sheer rock faces and waterfalls amid lush subtropical vegetation. More than 250 species of amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals have been recorded there. This landscape offers a different focus from Rivera’s urban cultural attractions.

The Valle del Lunarejo visitor center is on Ruta 30 at kilometer 237. Check road conditions before setting out. History also shapes the wider destination: in 1904, the area around Masoller was the site of the battle that brought Uruguay’s civil wars to an end. General Aparicio Saravia was fatally wounded there. Well-preserved stone structures can still be seen in Valle del Lunarejo; they played an important role in the region’s historical conflicts.

The Ruinas de Santa Ernestina are part of the Ruta del Oro, which also includes Minas de Corrales. The Cuñapirú Dam was inaugurated in 1882 and declared a national historic monument; it is described as the first hydroelectric dam in the Americas. Together, these sites show different facets of the history of the wider Rivera destination, though they do not describe the same historical period.
