Discover Guichón
Accommodation in Guichón
Guichón can be explored through art in the streetscape, local stories about finds, and a range of experiences in the surrounding area. In town, an urban interpretive trail focusing on sculptures and murals takes centre stage; thermal waters and the Montes de Queguay protected area offer different highlights nearby.
Art on display in town
An urban interpretive trail in Guichón leads to more than 30 sculptures and murals by visual artist Juan Carlos Ualde, who is from Canelones. On the trail, you encounter two art forms and the work of a single artist. This makes the trail an art experience in its own right, rather than introducing Guichón solely through individual attractions.
“La Palma Sola,” a sculpture by Octavio Podestá at the entrance to Guichón, offers a different perspective. It was inaugurated in 2008 and is considered an iconic work by the people of Guichón. The trail, with its more than 30 works, is complemented by a single, clearly identified sculpture. If you are interested in public art, these offer different perspectives on the town.
Stories of finds and architectural history
In Guichón, you can visit private collectors by arrangement and talk with them about stories and materials relating to local finds. Arrange your visit with the collectors in advance if you would like to include this experience in your plans. Another story about a find concerns Uruguaysuchus aznarezi: remains of this species were found on an estancia near the centre of Guichón. Alongside conversations about local finds, this brings a specifically named species and its discovery site into focus.
At the level of the wider municipality, Estancia Buen Retiro–Castillo Morató is a National Historic Monument. Castillo Morató is an eclectic-style mansion built between 1902 and 1904. It combines Neoclassical and Late Medieval Renaissance elements. Here, “eclectic” means that different historical styles come together. Its architectural history thus adds another cultural perspective at municipal level to the sculptures and murals in Guichón.
Saltwater and nature in the surrounding area
Termas de Almirón lies along Ruta 90 in the wider Guichón area. It is Uruguay’s only thermal bath with natural saltwater, set in a natural environment. This is a different focus from the art and stories of finds in town: here, thermal waters and the natural surroundings define the character of the destination.
Visitors can go kayaking and canoeing in the Montes de Queguay protected area. They can also explore several walking trails there, accompanied by a guide. Access to private land within the protected area must be arranged with the owners. The Montes del Queguay visitor centre is on Calzada Andrés Pérez, also in the wider Guichón area.
Choose the focus of your stay
When looking for a holiday apartment or house in Guichón, a simple decision can help: would you mainly like to discover the art and stories of finds in town, or would you also like thermal waters and nature experiences in the surrounding area to be part of your stay?
