Durazno: History, Gaucho Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Durazno
Durazno offers a wide range of reasons to visit: an expansive Belle Époque residence, Gaucho traditions, museums and natural areas. Which of these aspects interests you most may also guide your search for a holiday rental in Durazno. Would you like to explore the destination’s history, focus on events and culture, or discover forests, riverside landscapes and wildlife? The places and topics below offer different ways to shape your stay.
Architecture, museums and history
The palace of physician Emilio Penza Berlingeri was built and inaugurated in 1905. The expansive residence is designed in the Belle Époque style. The building was declared a National Historic Monument in October 1996. You can also encounter architecture and history in Durazno’s other collections: the Museo Histórico Casa de Rivera is housed in the former residence of General Fructuoso Rivera and has been used as a museum since 1992. It houses the Durazno Departmental Archive, which includes document, voice and music archives, as well as an image archive. The latter comprises several thousand pieces of the cultural heritage of the department and the country.
Other museums highlight different aspects of history. The Museo Militar Tte. Gral. Pablo Galarza displays historical paintings, old uniforms, military equipment, furniture and documents from the period. The Museo Batalla del Río de la Plata (Cuartel Paso del Rey) explores the history of the Cuartel de Sarandí del Yi. Its military history collection includes weapons, uniforms and documentary photographs. It also commemorates the stay of crew members from the German battleship Graf Spee at the site, with objects and photographs from that period. Around one hundred works are on display at the Museo Claudio Silveira Silva. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider different ways to explore Durazno’s past and cultural heritage.
Gaucho traditions and experiences at Parque de la Hispanidad
Gaucho culture is another theme that Durazno brings to life through specific events. The 48th edition of the Festival Nacional e Internacional de Folclore took place at Parque de la Hispanidad from 23 to 25 September 2022. The programme for the 21st Encuentro Gaucho included all-day equestrian and artistic activities, a Gaucho parade through the city, and performances at the Rancho de Piedra. These events were part of the 2022 festival edition.
Parque de la Hispanidad is also a place for active recreation: it has six playing courts purpose-built for Tejo.
Forests, riversides and nature watching
The Sendero del Monte Indígena passes three sections of native forest. The plants mentioned along the trail include Sarandí trees, pitangas, arrayán, vines and mosses. Waterbirds can be observed at a lagoon farther along the trail. This route therefore focuses on plant life and birdwatching, offering a different experience from the historical collections or Gaucho traditions.
The wider destination of Durazno is also home to the 3,500-metre-long Eco Sendero “Riberas del Río Yi”. It takes visitors through natural areas along the riverside forest of the Río Yi, connecting the beach in the Puerto de los Barriles neighbourhood with the Paraje Rebollo area. There you will find a beach and sandy areas. In La Paloma, also within the destination of Durazno, lies the Gruta de La Llorona: a sandstone formation more than 20 metres high, formed around 380 million years ago in a Lower Devonian marine environment. The Gruta’s surroundings have a distinctive microclimate due to the slope of the land and the humidity, supporting native trees, ferns and culandrillos. The Iglesia Sagrado Corazón de Jesús in La Paloma is an architecturally noteworthy building.
