Puerto Platero: Beach, Dunes and Lagoons
Accommodation in Puerto Platero
Puerto Platero is a coastal landscape shaped by its beach, dunes, wetlands and lagoons. The beach known as “Playa agreste Puerto Platero” is 2,000 meters long. It stretches from the mouth of the stream east of the port, on the border with El Ensueño, to an area of rocks and vegetation west of the port, on the border with Playa Matamora.
Beach and Dune Landscape
The sandy beach is bordered by a belt of partly stabilized primary dunes. Beyond them are further dunes, with scattered Candelas and a few native trees. The dunes border wetlands and lagoons where Totora reeds, rushes and Caraguatás grow. The trees mentioned include Ceibo, Criollo willow and Mataojo. This coastal landscape brings together open sandy areas, vegetated dunes and wetland habitats.
Dense pine stands line the beach. Arroyo Pinto, along with groups of rocks and dense clusters of plants, can also be found on the shore; these features become more numerous toward the port. These details add further defining coastal features to the picture of this long stretch of beach.
The Former Port
Puerto Platero’s port is no longer in operation. In the early 20th century, it was used to transport sand from the coastal dunes to Buenos Aires. The place therefore combines a distinctive natural landscape with a specific economic past: the dunes are part of the coastal scenery, and their sand was once the port’s cargo.
