Plateritos: Coast, Shore Fishing and Archaeological Traces
Accommodation in Plateritos
For Plateritos, the coast offers a tangible starting point: Playa de Plateritos is assigned to the Plateritos sector in the district of Canoas de Punta Sal. The district’s thematic profile is also shaped by international shore-fishing tournaments, archaeological sites and the forest in Quebrada Plateritos. When planning, you can weigh whether you are especially interested in coastal events, archaeological traces or landscapes. This combination gives the trip more than a purely beach-focused appeal; at the same time, you choose the focus that suits you and your planned stay.
Shore Fishing and Coastal Events
The second international shore-fishing tournament took place in 2024 at Playa de Plateritos. The Municipalidad Distrital de Canoas de Punta Sal held the third edition in 2025 as part of the Fishermen’s Day activities. A total of 185 participants gathered at the beaches of Plateritos and Punta Mero. The call for entries for the third tournament at Playa de Plateritos included spinning and surfcasting. This means that both the event format on the shore and two specifically named fishing disciplines are part of the event’s profile.
Archaeological Traces in Sector A
In the district of Canoas de Punta Sal, the archaeological site Conchal Quebrada Plateritos Sector A lies on gently sloping, flat terrain covered with guarango and other local vegetation. The pottery found on the surface appears to have been used domestically. It has a red slip and a thin paste fired in an oxidizing atmosphere. According to the recorded pottery material, the site was probably inhabited during the Late Intermediate Period. These details illuminate different questions: domestic use describes the pottery’s presumed function, while the Late Intermediate Period indicates the presumed time of occupation.
Numerous mollusk remains are scattered across the terrain; they are especially abundant along the cut made by a road that can be driven on. The remains are bivalve shells about ten centimeters in diameter. Together with the pottery details, these finds give the archaeological theme a tangible material dimension.
Forest and Time-Limited Protection
Bosques de Hualtacos de Plateritos is classified in the district as a natural site, scenic area and forest. The Hualtaco forest is located in Quebrada Plateritos. In addition to Hualtacos, Palo Santo and Sapote grow there, and mammals that are rare on the coast, such as puma, armadillo and anteater, are also mentioned. For nature enthusiasts, vegetation and mammals are distinct topics alongside the beach.
The archaeological sites Conchal Quebrada Plateritos Sector A and Sector B received provisional protection for two years each in March 2025; the protection can be extended for the same period. This offers two ways to approach the cultural themes: the specific finds in Sector A and the time-limited protection of both sectors.
Choose the Right Focus for Your Trip
When searching for a holiday rental in Plateritos, you can first decide which theme you want your trip to revolve around: coastal events, the Sector A archaeological site, or the forest and landscape of the Quebrada. This lets you tailor your holiday-rental search to your travel interests rather than looking only for a general beach setting. If you want fishing tournaments to determine your travel dates, include the current event schedule in your planning.
