El Alto: Coast, Whale Watching and Fishing Tradition
Accommodation in El Alto
El Alto offers two perspectives for a stay: the town itself and maritime experiences in its associated municipality. The Plaza de Armas “Miguel Grau” in El Alto was highlighted as a particularly noteworthy place in the district during a tourist visit. Along the coast, there is also Playa Cabo Blanco, whale watching and traditional fishing. When choosing a vacation rental, you can consider whether you want to focus primarily on exploring El Alto or orient your stay more toward coastal activities.
Coast, Water and Travel Season
Playa Cabo Blanco is in the associated municipality and is one kilometer long. Warm, crystal-clear, turquoise water defines the beach. Playa Cabo Blanco is considered suitable for surfing and sport fishing for marlin and tuna; the waves are particularly suitable for surfing in November and December. This gives the coast specific seasonal points of interest for different interests.
In Cabo Blanco, a whale-watching ceremony is officially held every year on the third Sunday in July. The municipal administration of the El Alto district opened the 2025 whale-watching season there. The annual date in July and the waves that are particularly suitable for surfing in November and December offer different considerations when choosing when to travel. Check the event dates for your travel year if you would like to attend the ceremony. In the area around El Alto, Cabo Blanco is also associated with hiking and trekking.
Maritime Tradition and Named Places
Near El Alto is Caleta Cabo Blanco. It is associated with the Ernest Hemingway tourist promenade and tourist viewpoints. At the same time, it is a place with a distinctive fishing tradition: the traditional knowledge and practices of navigation and fishing using artisanal sailing boats have been declared part of the nation’s intangible cultural heritage. Artisanal fishers in the region have passed this practice down from their ancestors since pre-Hispanic times. Thus, the Caleta is a place where not only maritime experiences but also inherited knowledge and practices take center stage.
In the associated municipality, Playa Peña Negra is linked to the Piscina de Peña Negra, one of its points of interest; the Centinela del Buque Fantasma was also named as a point of interest at Playa Peña Negra. These two names give you specific reference points for coastal destinations that are part of the area alongside Cabo Blanco beach. Together with the Plaza de Armas “Miguel Grau” and the Caleta, they offer a selection of different places and themes, rather than just a single beach visit.
Arriving and Planning Your Stay
From the Terminal de El Alto (Eppo/Montero), an 80-meter paved walking route takes about five minutes to reach the Caleta de Cabo Blanco stop. Actual walking time may vary. In El Alto, tourist information, taxi services, restaurants, a travel agency and internet services are available to help visitors find their way around. The town is also associated with boat rentals and rentals of four-wheel-drive vehicles.
For your travel planning, you can weigh different priorities: finding your way around town and the short walk from the terminal to the stop, or the coastal attractions in the associated municipality. When looking for a vacation rental, consider which experiences will matter most during your stay. The plaza, the fishing tradition, beach activities and the whale-watching date each offer a different way to experience El Alto and its surroundings.
