Nuevo Imperial combines a protected coastal forest on the Río Cañete with traces of the ancient Inca road and a vibrant festival culture. The district also has regional Pisco traditions and a landscape shaped by irrigation. If you would like to combine nature, history and local cuisine on one trip, the district offers a range of themes to consider as you plan. When choosing a holiday rental, it is worth first deciding whether you mainly want to explore the forest or focus your trip on culture and festivals.

Protected Forest and Qhapaq Ñan

The Bosque de Protección Aledaño a la Bocatoma del Canal Nuevo Imperial is an 18.11-hectare protected area in the district of Nuevo Imperial. It has been protected since 19 May 1980. Riverside plants include Huarango, Algarrobo, Caña brava, Pájaro bobo, Sauce llorón and Cardo. The fauna includes, among other species, the Peruvian woodpecker, Fringilo-inca, Turtupilín, Fringilo apizarrado, herons and ducks, as well as the coastal fox, desert cat, rodents, lizards, Jergón costero, shrimp and crabs. The area’s diversity thus ranges from plants and birds to mammals, reptiles and aquatic animals.

The forest acts as a natural barrier along the Río Cañete and protects water infrastructure. It includes the canal and the Bocatoma, a water intake that is important irrigation infrastructure for the Cañete Valley. A section of the Qhapaq Ñan, the ancient Inca road, also runs along the edge of the forest. Stone remains and original structures have been preserved there. In the district, the forest is considered a place to observe birds, plants and animals; walking along the Qhapaq Ñan is also described as a visitor experience. Check access arrangements before your visit.

Cultural Traces in the District

The Iglesia de Santo Domingo de la Candelaria de Pocoto is associated with Nuevo Imperial. It has been designated a historic monument since 26 April 1989; the designation is listed as R.J. No. 191-89-INC/J. The district is also home to the Sitio Arqueológico Puntón de Caltopilla, a residential settlement with stone walls that are partly heavily weathered and plastered exterior surfaces. A 2025 resolution by the Ministry of Culture granted the site provisional protection for two years, with a possible extension. Alongside the natural landscape, these historical connections give the trip an archaeological and religious dimension.

Religious traditions in the district include the pilgrimage to Pócoto and the celebration of the Virgen de Chapi. Check the latest dates and arrangements before your trip. The Plaza de Armas is also a venue for community events: as part of the district anniversary celebrations, ceremonial events were held there on 22 June 2026. The Bajada de Reyes was celebrated there on 6 January 2023; the municipal description called it a festival’s return after many years.

Festival Culture and Regional Cuisine

At the II. Festi Cerdo on 17 August 2025, local pork-based specialties were served at the Plaza de Armas, accompanied by music and dancing. The 2023 Vendimia was the XI. Festival de la Uva, el Vino y el Pisco and took place on 1 and 2 April. Both examples offer insight into specific festival occasions, but do not indicate future dates. If a festival is central to your trip, check its current dates before booking.

A municipal report from 2023 describes the district as a Pisco producer. An academic account from 2021 links the district and the travel corridor with Sopa de frijolito, Sopa seca de camarones, Dulce de membrillo and Mermelada de higo. Restaurants are also listed for Ciudad Nuevo Imperial. Check which options are available at the time of your visit before you travel.

Getting There and Choosing a Holiday Rental

A 16-kilometre paved road leads from the Plaza de Armas in Nuevo Imperial to the protected forest. The journey by public minibus is listed as taking around 20 minutes, though this can vary. If the forest and Qhapaq Ñan are the focus of your trip, take this connection into account when planning and check current travel information in advance. Choose your holiday rental with your plans in mind, whether you want to explore nature and the irrigation landscape or focus your trip mainly on historic sites and festivals with confirmed dates.
