La Libertad in Peru offers a variety of travel experiences: In Huanchaco, fishing and the traditional Caballitos de Totora shape the town’s history; at the Santuario Nacional de Calipuy, the focus is on protecting the Puya Raimondi. Cascas combines a religious patron-saint festival with a wine industry whose origins date back to the 1960s. When choosing your destination, you can therefore consider whether you are especially interested in boat traditions, nature, or local culture.

Huanchaco: Totora, Fishing, and the Sea

Los Totorales de Huanchaco, also known as Humedales, Pantanos, or Balsares de Huanchaco, are artificial wetlands shaped by the Chimú culture. They were used for artisanal fishing and created to obtain Totora reeds for building Caballitos de Totora. The landscape and the shape of the boats are closely connected here: the reeds are not only a material used for traditional boats, but are also associated with the wetlands.

Huanchaco is an old fishing village. There, you can see the pre-Columbian Caballitos de Totora—traditional boats used by fishermen on Peru’s northern coast. Rides in the boats are offered at Balneario de Huanchaco, where sport fishing is also possible. The Muelle de Huanchaco offers another perspective on the sea: the stone pier is five meters wide and extends 180 meters from shore into the sea. In Huanchaco, then, observing the boat tradition, taking a ride in a Caballito, and sport fishing are distinct activities to enjoy.

For help planning your journey: Balneario de Huanchaco is 13 kilometers from the Plaza de Armas in Trujillo. The drive takes about 30 minutes by private car on a paved road; actual travel time may vary.

Calipuy and the Puya Raimondi Population

The Santuario Nacional de Calipuy protects a dense population of Puya Raimondi, with more than 90,000 plants. This species is a distinct natural attraction in La Libertad, different in focus from Huanchaco’s fishing and boat traditions. If you are planning a visit, note the access requirement: visits are partially restricted and must be requested ten days in advance. Check the current requirements before your trip.

Cascas: Patron-Saint Festival and Wine Industry

Cascas’s religious patron-saint festival in honor of the Virgen del Rosario de Chiquinquirá has been celebrated since 1842. The festival includes cultural events and various performances. If you would like to plan your trip around the occasion, check the event dates. Wine production is also part of the town’s character: Cascas’s wine industry dates back to the 1960s, and a large share of residents produce wine. Alongside the festival, Cascas therefore offers a distinctive cultural and economic focus for planning your trip.

Huamachuco: A Large Plaza and a Stone Complex

At approximately 15,000 square meters, the Plaza Mayor de Huamachuco is one of the largest plazas in Peru. The stone complex Marcahuamachuco lies approximately 9.5 kilometers west of Huamachuco. These figures offer different points of reference: the area describes the plaza in Huamachuco, while the approximate distance locates the complex west of the town. Those interested in urban spaces and stone structures will find two clearly identified points of interest for exploring the region.
