Palpa lies between the Palpa and Vizcas rivers. At the Plaza de Armas, colourful bougainvilleas and ornamental fountains add splashes of colour; nearby, you’ll encounter geoglyphs and rock art. The town brings together impressions of its streetscape and a variety of archaeological motifs. Those interested in the landscape and its historical traces can plan their visits around each site and its distinctive features.

Nearby Geoglyphs and Petroglyphs

The nearby Telar de Sacramento features lines, spirals and trapezoids. The geoglyphs were created by the Nasca culture during its early period, between 0 and 250 AD. Telar has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Lines and Geoglyphs of Nasca and Palpa” since 14 July 2016. Its viewpoint is 2 km northwest of Palpa’s Plaza de Armas and can be reached from the car park by climbing steps. The geometric forms and designated viewpoint make this visit different in focus from the rock art at Chichictara.

Nearby Chichictara has more than 400 petroglyphs in a rocky area that stretches for 3 km. The rock art is found on the slopes of the hills. A guide is required for the visit; visitors can hike to the petroglyphs and photograph them. The site can therefore be explored primarily through its rock carvings, while at Telar, the large-scale geometric lines, spirals and trapezoids catch the eye.

Portals, Temples and Exhibitions in Palpa

There are also specific differences to discover in the townscape: the Portal de Escribanos has 27 arches and the Portal de Botoneros has 29; both have been designated environmental monuments. Among Palpa’s colonial-era sights is the San Cristóbal Temple. The Casona San Agustín and Casona Ferrer also feature colonial-style architecture. The Agencia Agraria is housed in the Casona Ferrer.

The chronological exhibition in Palpa traces the development of the Paracas, Nasca, Huari, Ica-Chincha and Inca cultures in the Palpa valleys, and displays original ceramics. Another exhibition presents finds from Jauranga, Los Molinos and La Muña, three major excavation sites of the Nasca-Palpa archaeological project. As another point of reference, an exhibition is located opposite the Plaza de Armas on the second floor of the provincial administration building. From time to time, an exhibition hosts talks about Palpa’s cultural heritage for students or interested tourists. Check in advance whether a session is scheduled.

Spring, Birds and Local Specialities

The nearby Manantial de la Máquina is a natural spring 1 km north of Palpa. From May to October, migratory birds may be seen there, including Polla de agua, Martín pescador, Garza huaco and Grulla moteada. Seasonal birdwatching offers a different perspective on the surrounding area than the archaeological sites.

Local flavours are also part of Palpa’s character: the microclimate gives seasonal fruit such as oranges and mangoes a distinctive sweetness and vivid colour. Warm ponche made with peanuts and sesame is served with sandwiches during the patron saint’s feast days. This dish represents another side of the town, alongside its archaeological and colonial-era attractions.

Getting to Palpa and Finding a Holiday Apartment

From Ica’s Plaza, Palpa’s Plaza de Armas can be reached by private car via a 100 km paved route in about two hours; journey times may vary. Palpa’s tourist information office is at Portal Escribanos 143–145. Check the address before setting off.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Palpa, consider whether you mainly want to experience the townscape, with its plaza, portals and exhibitions, or plan visits to nearby archaeological sites. A guide is required at Chichictara; at Telar, steps lead from the car park to the viewpoint. These different visiting conditions offer practical guidance for planning and deciding which destinations you want to focus on during your stay.
