Soray: Highland Landscape and Surrounding Culture
Accommodation in Soray
Soray combines a cool highland landscape with natural and cultural connections in the surrounding area. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing Soray’s own landscape character from the places and themes around Soraypampa.
Highland Plain and Plant Life
The Soray–Soraypampa sector lies at 3,861 m. Soray is considered a cold plain on bofedal mounds. Soray’s climate is described as rainy and semi-frosty, with a dry winter; between the hills, it encourages plant growth. The elevation, plain, and vegetation give the destination a distinct landscape character. If you are choosing a place to stay with nature and terrain as your main focus, you will find more here than a single landmark: the wide-open landscape and its seasonal features are also part of Soray’s character.
Humantay Lagoon is in the Soraypampa sector. It is at the foot of Humantay, or Apu Humantay, opposite Apu Salkantay, and has turquoise water. This specific natural feature adds a different landscape motif to the highland plain. When planning, it is helpful to keep in mind that Soray and Soraypampa are separately named geographic areas.
Routes and Cultural Connections
The pre-Hispanic Mollepata–Salkantay route section is approximately 25 km long and passes through the Mollepata, Soraypampa, and Salkantay sectors. These sectors help make its regional extent clear: the length given refers to a route section that passes through several areas, not to a single place in Soray.
Salkantay also has cultural significance in the surrounding area: it is revered as an Inca huaca, or apu. It is also connected with the Historic Sanctuary of Machupicchu. The part of the Mollepata District that includes the Soray sector lies within its buffer zone. These connections provide a cultural and geographic context for the landscape in addition to its natural features.
In the direction of Soraypampa, the muleteers’ association is considered a local custom that has grown along with the increase in tourist numbers. Soray is also described as a natural area where tourist activities take place.
Access and Choosing a Holiday Apartment
Sayllapata and Challacancha are the access points to Soray. The Mollepata–Soraypampa connecting road is classified as a departmental road, is about 50 km long, and is unpaved. This length refers to the road itself. Check its condition before setting out so you can take the current road surface into account when planning.
Accommodation modules and lodgings for muleteers have been built in the Soray sector. When searching for a holiday apartment, it is especially helpful to distinguish Soray’s character from the natural and cultural features in the surrounding area. This lets you choose a location based on whether the highland plain, the lagoon in Soraypampa, or the cultural significance of Salkantay will be the main focus of your trip.
