In the Province of Paucartambo, Inca history, vibrant festival traditions, and landscapes at the transition between the ecosystems of the Andes and the Amazon region come together. The town of Paucartambo lies in a valley where the Río Mapacho and Río Qenqomayu converge. When planning your trip, you can focus on different things, from cultural experiences and high-Andean natural areas to routes towards Manu.

Andean Landscapes and Views of the Amazon Region

The Mirador Tres Cruces is located in the district of Kosñipata at an altitude of about 3,700 metres. At sunrise, an optical phenomenon appears above an extensive sea of clouds covering the Amazon Basin of Parque Nacional del Manu: the light can create the impression of several suns or a luminous spectrum. The viewpoint makes the transition between the Andes and the Amazon region a striking focus for an excursion.

The high-Andean sector of Parque Nacional del Manu also shapes the province’s natural landscape. Its environments include cloud forests and grasslands; orchids, pumas, and spectacled bears are found in this sector. If you are especially interested in nature, this combination offers a different travel focus from Inca architecture and religious festivals.

Inca Architecture and Religious Traditions

The Watoqto Archaeological Complex is an Inca architectural monument in the district of Colquepata. Its three areas are named Sector Ceremonial, Sector Saqsaywaman, and Sector Pachatuzan. A pre-Hispanic paved Inca road leads to the complex and branches off further towards Qosñipata and Manu. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider both archaeological history and the province’s wider route connections.

In the town of Paucartambo, dances accompany the procession of the Virgen del Carmen. The Festividad de la Virgen del Carmen de Paucartambo takes place every year from 15 to 18 July and attracts worshippers as well as national and international tourists. If you would like to experience this tradition, you can make the festival days a focus of your trip; they also offer a clear cultural focal point for a group trip, alongside nature and excursions.

Another religious occasion is the main feast day of the Santuario Del Señor De Exaltacion De Sani on 14 September. It includes penitential pilgrimages on foot from the Comunidad de Chacabamba in the district of Huancarani to the sanctuary. This experience is specifically associated with a pilgrimage on foot and differs in its occasion and format from the dances and procession in honour of the Virgen del Carmen.

Routes and Travel Focus

The stated route from Cusco to the town of Paucartambo covers 105.5 kilometres on a paved road by tourist bus; the journey takes 2 hours and 15 minutes. A different approach is described for the Mirador Tres Cruces: from the town of Paucartambo, travel 26 kilometres by public bus on a paved road to Abra Acjanaco, then 14 kilometres by private vehicle along a drivable unpaved road. These details help distinguish the two routes when planning.

A route to the Río Manu leads from Paucartambo via Acjanaco, the cloud forest, Pilcopata, Atalaya, and the Río Alto Madre de Dios. Visitors to Parque Nacional del Manu must use tour operators authorised by SERNANP. If Manu is part of your plans, take this requirement into account when organising your trip and distinguish a visit to the national park from the route sequence described.

Community Tourism and Travel Focus

Since 2006, the Comunidad Nativa Queros Wachiperi has been developing community tourism in the district of Kosñipata. This includes visits to the Hinkiori petroglyphs and traditional cuisine. This focus combines cultural discovery with local food and differs from the archaeological areas of Watoqto or the religious festivals. When looking for a holiday rental, you can therefore first consider which themes matter to your travel group: nature and viewpoints, Inca history, festival traditions, or community tourism. The province offers several clearly distinct reasons to shape your trip around them.

As another place within the province, you can also include Pillcopata in your further exploration. More destinations: Aguas Calientes, Province of Calca, Espinar, Pisac, Quispicanchi.

For the broader travel overview: Cuzco.
