Namora combines a historic townscape with a guitar-making tradition rooted in the district and scenic destinations nearby. In town, the squares, church and festivals take centre stage; beyond the centre, a waterfall and a lagoon shape the natural landscape. These different themes can help you plan your trip: would you mainly like to explore the local culture, or also make time for the surrounding landscapes?

Squares, architecture and festivals in Namora

Plaza de Armas is the hub of the town’s civic, political and tourist centre. Historic buildings lie nearby, including the Church of Santa Rosa de Namora. The houses retain balcony balustrades, while decorative mouldings on doors and windows add further architectural detail to the townscape. Plaza Mayor de Namora was designated a Monumental Urban Landscape under Ministerial Resolution No. 303-87 of 26 June 1987 and forms part of Peru’s national cultural heritage. The area around Plaza de Armas also belongs to a designated Monumental Urban Landscape within this cultural heritage.

Plaza de Armas is also the ceremonial venue for official festivals. These include the district anniversary, national holidays, the patronal festival of Santa Rosa de Namora and carnival celebrations. Bicycle excursions are also listed around the square. The central location thus brings together town culture and an active excursion theme, without the festivals having a fixed schedule or the excursions following a specified itinerary.

Guitar making as a living tradition

The musical tradition also shapes the district of Namora. The making of stringed instruments, especially guitars, was declared part of Peru’s national cultural heritage in 2022. Knowledge, skills and practices related to Namora’s guitars are passed down from generation to generation. For visitors interested in craftsmanship and cultural traditions, this offers a distinct way to connect with the place: alongside the visible historic townscape, a skill passed down through generations takes centre stage. The tradition belongs to the district, not just to the plaza or a single building.

Waterfall, lagoon and surrounding landscapes

El Cumbe waterfall is located in the hamlet of Cau Cau, about eight kilometres east of Namora, at an elevation of 2,826 metres. The waters of the Río La Quinua plunge from a height of approximately 23 metres through an opening between rock walls; lush vegetation surrounds the waterfall. January to April is considered the best time to visit, as water levels are higher during the rainy season. Conditions can vary from year to year.

Laguna de Quelluacocha is located in the hamlet of Quelluacocha, northeast of the district of Namora and about eight kilometres away. The lagoon is home to wild Quelluas, considered endangered wild ducks; totora grows in the central part of the lake. This gives the lake a very different character from the rock opening and cascading water at El Cumbe: here, waterfowl and plants define the natural landscape. Excursions around the lake, as well as hiking and trekking, are associated with the lagoon. Check before planning whether these activities are currently available and what the trail conditions are like.

What shapes your choice of excursion

Each destination offers a different focus: at the plaza, architecture, culture and official festivals are to the fore; El Cumbe offers a striking combination of rock walls, waterfall and vegetation; at Laguna de Quelluacocha, wild ducks and totora are defining features of the natural landscape. When planning your trip together, you can weigh these themes according to what your travel group is curious about. The waterfall’s seasonal feature and the need to check conditions for activities at the lagoon in advance are separate practical considerations.

Namora is 24 kilometres from Cajamarca; the approximate journey time is about 45 minutes, although road and traffic conditions can affect it. When looking for a holiday apartment in Namora, the historic squares and guitar-making tradition may be deciding factors. If El Cumbe or the lagoon matter more to you, take their respective locations and seasonal or current conditions into account when planning, rather than treating the nearby destinations as if they were in the town centre. This helps you decide what you want to focus on during your stay without combining the different places and activities into a single excursion theme.
