Discover Jaén: Patronal Festival, Archaeology and Nature Nearby
Accommodation in Jaén
Jaén brings together an annual festival, archaeological heritage and a variety of destinations in the surrounding area. When planning your trip, it makes a difference whether you mainly want to experience the city’s culture or plan several excursions into the surrounding area. The following highlights can help you choose a focus for your stay.
A festival and archaeological history
Every year, Jaén celebrates its Patronal Festival in honour of its patron saint, Señor de Huamantanga. The main day of the festival is 14 September; the dates of the annual festivities may vary. So if you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the specific dates for your chosen year.
One archaeological landmark nearby is Montegrande, 3.5 kilometres south of the city of Jaén. The site was declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation on 17 November 2009. It includes the first monumental architecture with a public and religious character discovered in the Peruvian Amazon region. Members of the Marañón culture built it from earth and rock 5,300 years ago. Archaeological research at the site is ongoing.
Jaén’s “Hermógenes Mejía Solf” Regional Museum is located in the building of the “4 de junio de 1821” Technological Institute, around two kilometres from the centre of Jaén. Its archaeological collection includes numerous artefacts, especially from the Pakamuros culture, including ceramics, goldwork, stone artefacts and fossils. Other subjects covered by the collection include anthropology, palaeontology, art, natural sciences and archaeology. The exhibits currently on display may change; check opening hours and access before your visit.
Farms with coffee, bees and trout
At Finca Agro Apícola La Arboleda, 6.2 kilometres from Jaén, coffee growing and beekeeping take centre stage. Visits to the coffee plantations and apiary are possible but must be arranged with the farm. During the beekeeping experience, visitors can approach the hives, learn about the queen bee and observe worker bees producing honey. It offers an insight into cultivation alongside the chance to observe a bee colony.
Finca Paraíso de La Trucha is 24 kilometres from Jaén and combines coffee growing, trout farming and experiential tourism. Visitors can take part in their hosts’ daily routine, harvest peas, potatoes and coffee, and feed the animals. The organic coffee varieties include Catimor, Borbón and Caturra. The farm offers a different focus from La Arboleda: trout farming and taking part in agricultural activities are also central here.
The nature around Paraíso de La Trucha also shapes the character of this excursion destination. The forest there is home to the Andean cock-of-the-rock, Huataracos, majaz, armadillos and porcupines. The wildlife is part of the surroundings, not a guarantee of sightings. When comparing the two farms, you can therefore choose between beekeeping and coffee plantations on the one hand, and agriculture, trout and forest scenery on the other.
Waterfalls, plants and views
Cascada Santa Fe is 16.9 kilometres from Jaén. A 15-minute walk from the hamlet of Santa Fe leads to the waterfall. Local guidance is recommended for finding your way; also check current trail conditions before setting out.
The Botanical Garden is four kilometres southeast of the city, in the Fila Alta sector, third stage. It showcases more than 600 plant varieties from this region. If you want to visit, check access arrangements in advance. For a different perspective on the landscape, head to Mirador Jaén: from there, the view extends across the entire city and the surrounding green valleys and slopes.
Trout dishes and thermal springs
The restaurant at Finca Paraíso de La Trucha serves dishes including fried trout, trout chicharrón and coffee brewed in a pot. As current operations should be confirmed before travelling, it’s best to check whether the restaurant will be open when you visit.
Aguas Termales del Almendral is 25 kilometres from Jaén, near the confluence of the Chamaya and Marañón rivers. Thermal springs containing sulphur and iron emerge there; the site is considered a thermal spa. Before making a side trip, check current access and available facilities.

This lets you shape your stay around the city’s history, agricultural experiences, nature or thermal springs without combining every destination into a single excursion itinerary.
