Cabanaconde combines sweeping views of the Colca Canyon with trails into its depths and a calendar of local festivals. As you plan your stay, you can consider whether you want to focus on the views and hiking or on culture and local traditions. The different viewpoints, trails, and festivals each give the town a distinct character.

Views of the Colca Canyon

The Mirador de San Miguel is on the edge of the Colca Canyon at an elevation of about 3,330 meters. It takes approximately 25 minutes to walk there from Cabanaconde. From the viewpoint, you can see the towns of Tapay, Cosñihua, and Malata, the mountains of Sepregina and Bomboya, and part of the canyon. There is also a life-size replica of the Juanita mummy at the viewpoint. On the way there, you can also visit the Museo de la Momia Juanita; check in advance whether a visit is possible during your travel dates.

Another viewpoint is the Mirador de Achachihua, about 15 minutes from Cabanaconde. From there, the panorama stretches across the inter-Andean valley of Sangalle and to the opposite side of the Colca Canyon. The viewpoints offer different perspectives: at San Miguel, the panorama includes the named towns and mountains, while at Achachihua, it takes in the valley of Sangalle and the opposite side of the canyon. This can help you choose a viewpoint based on the scenery you are most interested in when planning your day.

Hiking trails toward Sangalle

Cabanaconde is the starting point for various hiking trails that descend into the canyon, including routes to the Oasis de Sangalle. The Mirador de San Miguel is part of the trekking route through the Colca and is also a starting point for the descent to the Valle de Sangalle. The viewpoints and hikes are different reasons to explore the area; check local conditions before setting out on the trails.

The Achachihua–Llahuar, San Miguel–Puente San Juan, and Sejana–Sangalle trekking routes are also useful reference points for hiking enthusiasts. They are located in the district of Cabanaconde, in Caylloma Province, in the Arequipa Region. The route names connect different starting and ending points. If you are looking for a vacation rental, Cabanaconde’s role as a starting point for various hiking trails may be a factor in your choice; plan your specific hike based on local trail conditions.

Festivals, dance, and cultural heritage

The town’s traditions are especially evident on festival days. The religious festival in honor of the Virgen del Carmen takes place every year on July 16. It includes musical groups known as “caperos” and traditional bullfights. Check the program for the relevant year before your trip. At the February festival of the Virgen de la Candelaria, people serve the traditional dish Chapliuchu: a mixture of spices, meat, charqui, potatoes, guinea pig, chicken, fried egg, and toasted bread. The Wititi dance is also part of Cabanaconde’s carnival traditions.

The town’s architectural and cultural history is also part of its character. The Templo de San Pedro Alcántara stands on the main square and is recognized as Cultural Heritage of the Nation under R.M. No. 0928-80-ED, dated 23.07.1980. Around Cabanaconde, architectural and ceramic remains show a clear Inca influence dating to the Late Horizon period. The church, remains, and festivals thus offer a different way to experience the destination than the viewpoints and hiking trails.

Choosing the right focus

To help choose where to stay, you can first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: Cabanaconde is interesting as a starting point for various hiking trails, while viewpoints, festival traditions, and cultural heritage offer other reasons to explore the town. If hiking is your main interest, factor local trail conditions into your plans. If you are interested in a festival, check its program for your travel dates. This way, you can search for a vacation rental in Cabanaconde based on the experiences you want to prioritize.
