Arequipa: Archaeology, Cultural Heritage and Regional Cuisine
Accommodation in Arequipa
Arequipa’s historic centre lies at the foot of three snow-capped volcanoes. Its cultural themes are also diverse: an important archaeological collection, Franciscan heritage and the region’s picantería tradition offer different perspectives on your trip. As you plan, consider whether you would most like to explore archaeology, historic sites or regional food culture.
Archaeology and History
The Museo Santuarios Andinos has an important archaeological collection. Its main attraction is a preserved pre-Hispanic figure known as the Dama de Ampato, Juanita la Niña de los Hielos or Juanita. These different names offer a concrete starting point if you would like to explore Arequipa’s archaeological heritage.
This focus differs from the themes at the Complejo San Francisco. Its library contains 20,000 volumes, as well as historical documents and maps; the complex also includes an art gallery. This brings different kinds of cultural heritage together: an archaeological collection on the one hand, and books, documents, maps and art on the other. If you are travelling with children, you can discuss together which of these topics interests them most.
Franciscan Heritage
The Complejo San Francisco is also home to the Museo Franciscano. It opened in 2006 to present Franciscan heritage and promote experiential religious tourism. This purpose gives the museum its own focus among Arequipa’s cultural attractions. If you are interested in religious history, you can include the library, art gallery and Museo Franciscano in your travel plans as different aspects of Franciscan heritage.
The Monasterio de Santa Catalina is also in Arequipa’s historic centre. If the monastery is of interest to you, you can consider staying in the historic centre as one possible guide when looking for a holiday apartment. For a visit to the Basílica Catedral de Arequipa, the Plaza de Armas is a useful point of reference: the cathedral is on the square. It is a 50-metre walk, or about 2 minutes, from the Plaza de Armas to the cathedral.
Picanterías and Regional Cuisine
In the Arequipa region, picanterías are traditional restaurants and reflect a long-standing connection between rural life and gastronomy. Cooking with firewood continues there. This gives regional food culture a distinct tradition that differs from the city’s archaeological and religious themes. If you would also like to explore regional cuisine on your trip, include this in your plans, bearing in mind that this description applies to the Arequipa region.
Plan Your Trip to Arequipa
Different interests may guide your choice of accommodation: the historic centre is a useful reference if the Monasterio de Santa Catalina is on your itinerary; the Plaza de Armas provides a point of reference for the Basílica Catedral. Archaeology, Franciscan heritage and regional cuisine add other possible areas of interest to these location-based options. This lets you connect your search for a holiday apartment with the question of which sides of Arequipa you would like to discover on your trip.
