In Chachapoyas, historic architecture, places of remembrance and exhibitions shape the city’s cultural perspective. Viewpoints and recurring festivals add to these themes. When choosing a holiday rental, it is worth first considering whether city history, an event date or both will define your stay.

Historic Streetscapes and Buildings

The historic centre was declared a Cultural Heritage Site of the Nation in 1988 for its outstanding historical and architectural value. Its preserved building stock includes Spanish-influenced buildings made of adobe and wood. These include two-storey buildings with entrance halls, courtyards and backyards, corridors, and balconies from the Republican era. The pedestrian promenade along Jr. Amazonas also includes historic mansions.

Another place of remembrance is the Pampas de Higos Urco, declared a Historic Monument on 30 December 1986 by Ministerial Resolution No. 796-86-ED. The walking route from the Plaza Mayor is listed as 2.7 kilometres and 30 minutes. This makes it possible to combine a walk with a specific destination, while the site’s historical significance remains part of the city’s history.

Notable Figures and Exhibitions

The Casa de Don Toribio Rodríguez de Mendoza in the historic centre was the birthplace of Toribio Rodríguez de Mendoza, a thinker and pioneer of Peruvian independence. The Casa’s Sala de Obispos displays twelve portraits of bishops who led the Diocese of Chachapoyas. The site thus connects the memory of an influential figure with a collection illustrating the diocese’s ecclesiastical history.

A different selection is on display in the third exhibition section of the Sala de Exhibición Gilberto Tenorio Ruiz. Stone cultural objects include clubs, axes, bludgeons and mortars; a replica of a structure from Kuélap is also on display. The different forms of objects and the replica offer distinct ways of looking at cultural artefacts and architecture.

The Iglesia Santa Ana is also a landmark for finding your way among historic buildings. It is considered viewable from the outside; check access arrangements locally before your visit.

City Views and Local Tradition

Those who would like to see Chachapoyas from a panoramic vantage point can visit two named viewpoints: Mirador de la Mama Nate offers panoramic views across the city, as does Mirador de Santa Rosa de Luya Urco. The viewpoints offer a different perspective from the houses, collections and historic places of remembrance in the cityscape.

A local tradition is associated with Pozo Yana Yacu: according to the story, people who drink from it fall in love with a Chachapoyana and feel drawn to the city. The story is part of Chachapoyas’s folklore; it is not a claim about any actual effect of the water.

Festivals and Travel Dates

Several recurring annual events may be relevant when planning your dates. The Semana Turística de los Chachapoyas takes place every year in June. In August, Chachapoyas celebrates the religious festival of the Virgen Asunta. The Raymi Llaqta de los Chachapoya takes place every year in the historic centre and includes cultural, social, recreational and historical activities. Its programme may vary.

The festivals mentioned offer different cultural points of reference for a stay, but they do not all take place in the same month. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular event, check its dates before making arrangements. When choosing a holiday rental, you can then consider whether you mainly want to explore the city’s history or plan your stay around an event date.

Getting Your Bearings on Arrival

The drive by private car from Chachapoyas Airport to the Plaza Mayor is listed as 6 kilometres and 13 minutes. From there, the distance to the Pampas de Higos Urco can also be considered as a walk: 2.7 kilometres, with a stated walking time of 30 minutes. The drive from the city bus station to the Plaza Mayor is listed as 1.6 kilometres and 5 minutes by private car. Travel times are estimates; road conditions and routes may change.

These distances refer to different starting points and modes of transport. They are therefore intended as an initial guide for arrival, not as a like-for-like comparison of places to stay.
