San Bernardo del Viento: River, Mangroves and Birdlife
Accommodation in San Bernardo del Viento
San Bernardo del Viento is a destination for travelers interested in river landscapes, mangroves and birdwatching. Within the municipality, the Río Sinú flows into the Caribbean Sea through three branches. There are also natural channels, wetlands and the Playas del Viento, each offering a different kind of natural attraction. If you are looking for an apartment or a vacation home, it is worth deciding which natural experience you want to make the focus of your stay.
River History and Mangroves
Caño Grande is a natural channel about 16 kilometers long. Until the mid-1930s, it was the former mouth of the Río Sinú; the channel ended in Bahía de Cispatá in the neighboring municipality of San Antero. A 2022 study places Caño Grande within the Distrito de Manejo Integrado de la Bahía de Cispata and identifies it as a protected area.
The Ciénagas Ostional, Navío and La Zona lie along Caño Grande and are surrounded by mangroves. Important attractions include La Cienaguita, La Chamba, Tuminá and the Ciénaga de Soledad. Some of these bodies of water are also lined with mangroves. La Cienaguita was created by the construction of a dam in 1943. The municipality therefore brings together mangrove landscapes, named wetlands and a specific history of the river mouth.
Birdwatching and Water Activities
A 2022 study records 216 bird species in the Caño Grande area; it highlights the Agamia agami, also known as the red heron, as a characteristic bird. Isla de los Pájaros is located at Ciénaga La Coroza. The study lists approximately 60 bird species that can be observed there. These two figures offer different reference points for birdwatching in the municipality.
To protect the wetland, access to Ciénaga La Coroza is restricted to traditional rowing canoes under the rule described in 2022; motorboats are not permitted. Check the current access rules before your visit. At the Río Sinú, visitors set out from Arenero and Puerto Chucha, also known as Puerto de las Mujeres, for tourist activities to discover the area's natural diversity. For specific plans, it is advisable to ask locally about current times and arrangements.
Choose a Location That Suits Your Priorities
The Playas del Viento are a few kilometers from the town center. If you want to focus your stay mainly on the beaches, keep this distance in mind when choosing your search area. When looking for an apartment or a vacation home, first consider whether you want to focus on the Playas del Viento, the wetlands or river activities.
Another point of reference is Paso Nuevo, which is 16 km from the administrative center of the municipality of San Bernardo del Viento.
