El Morro offers two very different ways to experience the journey: the Llanos sport of Coleo and the Virgen de la Peña Ecological Trail. The Manga de Coleo del Morro is a venue where Coleo is practiced; the trail follows the Río Cravo Sur and passes through canyons with cliffs more than 50 meters high. This gives you two distinct focal points for planning your trip: a specific sporting practice and a striking river and rock landscape.

Coleo: a Llanos sport in El Morro

In Coleo, the rider tries to balance on the horse, grab the calf's tail, and make the animal turn around its own axis. This movement is called a campana. The description makes the sequence clear through a specific maneuver: balance, grip, and a turn are all involved. For anyone interested in the sporting traditions of the Llanos, Coleo becomes a tangible physical practice.

The Virgen de la Peña Ecological Trail

You can experience the landscape along a very different route: the Virgen de la Peña Ecological Trail is 5.71 kilometers long and takes an average of two hours. This time estimate provides a guide for planning. The distance and duration may change if the route changes. Together with its course along the Río Cravo Sur and the cliffs rising more than 50 meters, this makes for a route shaped by both the river landscape and the canyons.

The trail is also connected to a religious pilgrimage route leading to the Santuario de la Virgen de la Peña. This gives the route a spiritual dimension as well as a connection to the landscape. Near the Santuario de la Virgen de la Peña are small thermal springs, which are said to have healing properties. This claim is part of the description of the springs; it should not be understood as a confirmed effect.

Two access routes with different endpoints

One access option follows an unpaved road from the Corregimiento of El Morro for 7.2 kilometers toward Labranzagrande, as far as the El Ciego waypoint. From there, continue on foot toward the Santuario de la Virgen de la Peña. A second option follows the same unpaved road from the Corregimiento for 1.7 kilometers to the entrance of the Santuario Virgen de la Peña, where the hiking trail begins. These distances refer to road sections leading to different points and should not be confused with the length of the trail. Check the current road conditions before setting out.

Using your travel interests to guide your accommodation search

If you are looking for a vacation apartment or house in El Morro, your planned travel interests can be a useful starting point. For the trail, consider its length, average duration, and your chosen access route when planning. Coleo centers on the specific campana maneuver. This lets you consider the nature route and the sporting practice as distinct highlights of your stay.
