Duitama offers a range of travel experiences, from architectural history and urban cultural venues to a trail through Andean forest. A tall Cedrela tree stands in Plaza de Los Libertadores, while the Sendero Ecológico la Zarza leads all the way to the páramo. The history of the mills and the distinctive architecture of Pueblito Boyacense also give the town its own character. Deciding which of these experiences you want to shape your stay can be a helpful guide when choosing a holiday rental in Duitama.

Squares and architectural history

Molino Tundama brings together several historical milestones: in 1911, it was known as the Tundama milling industry; its construction took 13 years; and in 1924, it began operating with 21 employees. Santiago Rivas Camacho was the main promoter of Molino Tundama. Its name, construction period and start of operations offer different ways into its history, without requiring a long sequence of details.

A Cedrela tree, about 25 to 30 metres tall, stands in the centre of Plaza de Los Libertadores. Its flowering season lasts from January to August. The tree gives the square a distinctive natural landmark; it is also where most of Duitama’s traditional festivals and celebrations take place. If a festival is important to your travel plans, check the announced dates in advance.

Catedral San Lorenzo dates from the 19th century and combines Romanesque, Doric and Spanish Baroque architectural elements. In addition to religious activities, it is used for the appreciation, interpretation and teaching of cultural and historical art. A visit to Duitama’s central areas can therefore be combined with a look at its architectural forms and art.

Architecture, culture and activity

Pueblito Boyacense is arranged around seven small squares. They represent Villa de Leyva, Tibasosa, Tenza, Sáchica, El Cocuy, Monguí and Ráquira. The buildings’ design also draws on Boyacá’s architecture, with features including clay tiles, cobbled surfaces, round timber and wooden balconies. In 2006, Pueblito Boyacense was declared a cultural and tourism heritage site of Boyacá. Its squares and building materials make it a distinctive architectural stop on a trip to Duitama.

Casona de Culturama promotes the community’s cultural development through theatre, music, painting and dance, as well as workshops and events. Check dates or the current event schedule if you want to plan around a particular activity. For a different focus, Parque Recreacional del Norte offers sports facilities, exercise areas for the general public and green spaces for relaxation and leisure. The two places thus appeal to different interests: cultural activities at one, and exercise and time outdoors at the other.

For those looking to include nature and active experiences, Sendero Ecológico la Zarza offers a more detailed picture of the landscape. The trail passes through Andean forest and alongside a small stream, goes by a tall rocky waterfall and ends in the páramo. It is located in Vereda La Trinidad, in the municipality of Duitama. Activities on the trail include hiking, guided tours and birdwatching; if you are planning a guided tour, check its availability before your visit.

Plan your trip around your interests

When choosing a holiday rental, you can first consider how much of a role culture, urban history, activity or nature should play in your trip. Those interested in history can include Molino Tundama, Catedral San Lorenzo and Pueblito Boyacense in their plans as distinct points of interest. Those who would rather spend time outdoors can consider Parque Recreacional del Norte and Sendero la Zarza.

If you are travelling with children or people of different ages, make your shared choices around your group’s interests—for example, architecture and squares, cultural activities or exercise in green spaces. This can help you decide whether you want your stay to focus more on urban experiences or nature, without planning every day in the same way. When looking for accommodation in Duitama, these priorities can help you choose a location that suits your plans.
