Bocachica on Tierrabomba can be explored through its fortifications from several angles: their layouts, structural features, and historical functions each tell a different story.

Different forms of defence

Fuerte de San José combines seven bombproof vaults with a raised platform and two lines of defence. These include Batería de Punta Abanico, with fourteen embrasures, and Batería Varadero, with seven cannons. The numbers and layout illustrate how different areas worked together within a fortification.

Batería del Ángel San Rafael represents a different form. Its irregular crescent-shaped layout follows the terrain, and a narrow but deep dry moat surrounds the complex. Its structures included a Casa Fuerte, a Tendal, a watchtower, and a cistern. The former garrison kitchen has also been preserved. Antonio de Arévalo built the battery in 1762 during the war against the English.

Construction of Batería de Santa Bárbara began in 1752 at a place called Puerta de Remedia Pobres, now part of the village of Bocachica. The fortification had twelve cannons and a rectangular layout; its design also included a moat and low-rise construction. Part of it remains near the Bocachica pier.

Connections and historical functions

Several tunnels connected Santa Bárbara with Batería del Ángel San Rafael. In the event of an attack, they were intended to allow troops to move safely between the two fortifications. This connection illustrates another aspect of defence planning: it was not only individual walls and guns that mattered, but also the routes between the structures.

Fuerte de San Fernando also adds to the picture of the fortifications. It included the Santiago and San Juan Francisco Regis batteries, as well as a complex of galleries, countermines, and firing positions. These could be used to trigger controlled explosions in the event of a land attack. In the early 19th century, during the struggle for independence from the Spanish Crown, the fort served as a prison for some independence leaders. Its architecture and former uses offer different ways to explore Bocachica’s history.
