The province of San Felipe lies along the Río Aconcagua, in a transition zone between Norte Chico and central Chile. River landscapes, high plateaus, protected areas and regional traditions shape the travel experience. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider whether nature experiences, outdoor activities, cuisine or culture should be the focus of your stay.

Rivers, climate and diverse landscapes

The province’s Mediterranean climate brings a marked concentration of rainfall in winter and a long, dry summer. The Río Aconcagua and Río Putaendo are among the most important surface waterways. Both have a nivo-pluvial flow regime, with the highest flows occurring during snowmelt. The annual rhythm of rainfall and flow gives the landscape its own character, without making the two rivers interchangeable features.

In the El Zaino–Laguna El Copín protected area, valley-floor, mid-mountain and high-mountain landscapes come together. The area includes shrubland and forest, as well as wetlands with a lagoon, streams, wet meadows and springs. About 500 Andean cypresses grow in the Serranía del Ciprés, alongside native and endemic botanical diversity. Those who enjoy experiencing different types of landscape will find more here than just a single natural attraction.

Trails and outdoor activities

In the Valle de Jahuel, a section of the former Camino del Inca leads from El Zaino to the high plateaus of Jahuel. This section is now part of the Senderos de Chile. Another section, also called El Zaino, runs along the slopes of Cerro Orolonco and connects Santa María, near Los Baños del Parrón, with the municipality of Putaendo. Details about the route and destination help distinguish these two trail sections.

Putaendo is well suited to outdoor activities such as trekking, walks and horseback riding. In the municipality of Panquehue, Parque La Giganta has marked trails for different experience levels. Downloadable KMZ and GPX files are also available for hiking and GPS applications. These different trail options let you plan your trip around the activity you want, rather than treating every outing as the same kind of hike.

The El Zaino–Laguna El Copín protected area brings together natural and cultural interests: Cerro El Zaino is home to numerous petroglyphs of Inca origin, as well as pottery from the early ceramic period. If you are interested in both landscapes and archaeological traces, you can take both into account when choosing places to visit.

Wine, cuisine and local traditions

Viña El Escorial, a boutique winery founded in 1880, is located in Panquehue. It specializes in producing high-quality wines and developing local wine tourism. The Vendimia in Panquehue is held annually between late March and early April. More than ten local wineries take part, presenting wines; offerings described also include fruit and cheese tastings, as well as traditional grape stomping.

Putaendo also has its own culinary tradition. This includes heritage dishes and preparations such as the famous “picada de Charqui,” which originated more than a century ago in the tradition of Putaendo’s muleteers. Tastings of artisanal liqueurs add to this culinary scene. If you enjoy combining travel with regional cuisine, you can plan for this tradition as a focus of its own alongside outdoor activities.

Places to consider when planning your trip

Another cultural point of interest is the Sociedad de Historia y Arqueología de Aconcagua. It was founded on December 7, 1945, to promote local history and establish a museum in the city of San Felipe. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can start with your own interests: trails and nature, regional cuisine, wine culture or historical topics each lead to a different focus within the province.
