Papudo brings together coastal scenery, an urban wetland and a distinctive architectural history. At Caleta Papudo, artisanal fishing and the trade in seafood come together; at Humedal Estero Agua Salada, native and migratory birds are in the spotlight. There are also two different beaches and activities on the water. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose from several focuses: wildlife watching, the coast, water sports and culture.

Beaches and birdlife

Playa Grande de Papudo stands out for its ample space and calm waters. Playa Chica is right by the town and begins to the south, next to the fishing cove. The beaches therefore offer different points of reference: Playa Grande is defined by its beach features, while Playa Chica is notable for its immediate proximity to town. When considering what kind of stay you want as you search for a holiday apartment, this distinction can help you decide.

Humedal Estero Agua Salada is recognized as an urban wetland. It is home primarily to native birds, and various migratory bird species can also be observed there. This combination makes the natural area interesting for birdwatching and offers a different experience from a day at the beach. The wetland also has paths that can be used for walking. Check current access conditions before your visit.

Fishing, cuisine and water activities

Boats used for artisanal fishing arrive at Caleta Papudo, where seafood is also sold. The cove thus connects a specific coastal location with the subject of fishing. If you enjoy making cuisine part of your stay, you can consider it as a focus in its own right alongside the beach and nature.

If you are planning a boat trip from Papudo along the coast to Isla de los Lobos, you can spot sea lions, Humboldt penguins and various seabirds along the way. Check the trip’s current availability in advance. Papudo’s calm waters are suitable for kayaking and paddleboarding. Kayak rentals and paddleboard lessons may be relevant to your plans; check in advance what is currently on offer.

Architectural history and local tradition

Iglesia Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes in Papudo was inaugurated in 1918 and declared a Monumento Histórico in 1995. The inauguration and subsequent designation as a historic monument mark two different dates in the history of the same building. Palacio Recart was designed by architect Josué Smith Solar. Chalet Recart is listed as an Inmueble de Conservación Histórica and is located at Calle Irarrázaval 31.

A 2013 report documents a procession for the Fiesta de San Pedro, which went from Capilla San Pedro Pescador to the former parish church by the sea. As a historical reference, the procession illustrates the connection between these two religious sites. Together with the buildings, it offers another way to explore Papudo’s history without losing sight of its beaches and nature.

Getting there and choosing a holiday apartment

Buses to Papudo run regularly from Santiago’s bus terminals. Check the timetable again before departure so your travel plans are based on the current service. When choosing a holiday apartment in Papudo, you can then consider what you want to focus on: should the beach, birdwatching, water or architectural history define your stay? Playa Chica offers the specific advantage of being close to town; Playa Grande is noted for its ample space and calm waters.
