Melipilla Province offers a wide variety of experiences: pottery-making shapes the town of Pomaire, water activities take center stage at Laguna Esmeralda, and hiking and nature observation await at Reserva Nacional Roblería del Cobre de Loncha. You’ll also find historic buildings, Chilean cuisine and tastings. When planning your vacation, you can start by asking yourself whether you’d like to focus on culture and crafts, nature or regional food and drink.

Ceramics, History and Architecture

Pomaire is a small village of potters. Local artisans sell ceramics made from greda clay along the main street—a good reason to take time to appreciate the craft and its products. Semana Pomairina is also known as a traditional Creole festival centered on chicha, pork and greda ceramics.

In Alhué, buildings tell the story of different historical periods. Iglesia de Alhué was completed in 1764. Its distinctive features include foundations made of river pebbles, adobe walls and a wooden roof with clay tiles. Casona de la Hacienda de Alhué is a historic monument with colonial-style architecture arranged around a central courtyard. Its broad corridors preserve historic saddles and carriages; inside, you’ll also find household items and a weapons collection.

Catedral de Melipilla also has a clearly defined history: it was inaugurated on April 30, 1992, at the site of the older vicarage church, built in the late 18th century. Claustro de San Agustín de Melipilla was declared a historic monument under decree D.S. 283 on June 22, 1988. In Alhué, Pueblo Villa de Alhué was designated a National Monument in the Zona Típica category in 1983, in recognition of its Chilean traditions and the architectural value of its colonial-style buildings.

Water Activities and Nature

Laguna Esmeralda has areas for picnicking, swimming, sport fishing and birdwatching. Kayaks, family boats and stand-up paddleboards are available to rent. This gives you a choice of both activities on the water and ways to observe your surroundings and relax. Deciding which of these options you’d like to include in your vacation can be a useful starting point when choosing a place to stay.

If you’d rather explore on foot and focus on the landscape and its flora and fauna, Reserva Nacional Roblería del Cobre de Loncha offers hiking, wildlife and plant observation, panoramic views and environmental information. Cerro Horcón de Piedra offers a different outlook: native forest grows on its slopes and along its trails, with views of the sea, San Antonio Bay and illuminated Santiago. Elsewhere in the region, the private, nonprofit Reserva Altos de Cantillana works to preserve 12,000 hectares of the Cordón Cantillana.

Regional Cuisine and Food Experiences

Pomaire serves traditional Chilean dishes such as pastel de choclo and empanadas. Curacaví is known for making Chilean sweets and chicha. If you’re interested in how regional foods are made, the Ruta del Queso lets you learn about the entire production process, from raising cattle to making cheese and other dairy products.

Wine and tastings are also among the experiences to discover: Viña Chocalán offers guided tours with tastings, as well as a wine and chocolate tour. Along with pottery, traditional dishes and cheesemaking, these experiences make food and drink a great focus for exploring the province, alongside nature or cultural activities.

Places and Getting There: A Guide

Ruta 68 is one of the main access roads to Provincia de Melipilla and a useful reference point when planning your arrival. When choosing a vacation rental, you can start with your interests: a trip focused on discovering Pomaire and its ceramics offers a different experience from a stay centered on hiking, birdwatching or water activities. The places and activities themselves can help you decide how to prioritize your travel plans.
