San Fernando brings together historic buildings and museum exhibits with a landscape shaped by vineyards, farmland, rivers and hills across the municipality. It also features mountain and valley scenery, as well as archaeological, historical and cultural heritage. If you would like to combine different discoveries on your trip, the town offers more than one way to explore: architecture and local history sit alongside exhibitions and landscapes.

The Museum and the Region’s Past

The Museo Lircunlauta is a former 18th-century country house; its grounds are closely tied to the founding of San Fernando. The Sala Precolombina presents the region’s pre-Hispanic past through archaeological and palaeontological exhibits. This part of the museum thus focuses on a long history that predates the town’s founding.

A different perspective is offered by the exhibition Impronta Campesina. It uses a model of the Lircunlauta hacienda to introduce visitors to life on the estate. Together, the museum’s exhibits appeal to different interests: the Sala Precolombina focuses on archaeological and palaeontological evidence, while the model explores life on a hacienda. If you are travelling with children, you can plan for these different exhibits to provide opportunities to discover and ask questions together.

Buildings with Distinctive Character

The townscape also features buildings whose architectural characteristics differ markedly from one another. The current building of Liceo Neandro Schilling was completed in 1901. It is neoclassical in style, with a continuous row of windows and a central triangular pediment. The Capilla de las Hijas de la Caridad de San Vicente de Paul was declared a National Monument in 1984. Its façades combine Gothic design elements with brickwork decoration and exposed masonry.

The Iglesia San Francisco makes a different impression: its dome has Romanesque influences, while its windows and door feature Gothic elements. The church was founded in October 1744 by eight Jesuit missionaries. The Cárcel de San Fernando is also part of the town’s history: it was built in 1891 as part of a local development plan. A city tour takes visitors to the main monuments in the historic centre. The buildings and their varied forms offer points of departure for exploring San Fernando’s history and architecture.

Bringing Landscape and Travel Interests Together

The municipality’s diversity also shapes the travel experience beyond its architecture. Farmland and vineyards sit alongside rivers and hills; at the same time, its tourism profile brings together mountain and valley landscapes with cultural and historical heritage. Vineyard visits and tastings of local wines are presented as visitor activities in the municipality. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider wine and landscape as interests in their own right, alongside buildings and museum exhibits.

When looking for a holiday rental, use your planned visits as a guide: consider which activities are important to you and check which location would suit your daily schedule.
