Yerbas Buenas: History and Cultural Traditions
Accommodation in Yerbas Buenas
Yerbas Buenas combines a rich history with architecture and cultural traditions. On today’s Plaza de Armas, the Spanish established their military camp during the battle on April 27, 1813. Historic buildings and places that have shaped the community offer different ways to explore it: from the events of 1813 to folklore, reading, and rural song.
History at the Plaza, Museum, and Church
Plaza de Armas is linked to a specific historical scene: during the Battle of Yerbas Buenas, also called the “Sorpresa de Yerbas Buenas,” the Spanish established their military camp there on April 27, 1813. The area around the plaza and adjacent parts of Yerbas Buenas were declared a Zona Típica (Historic Zone) by Decree D.S. 548 of July 28, 1987.
The Museo Histórico de Yerbas Buenas is housed in a historic building with adobe walls, a square-pattern brick floor, exposed beams, and a clay-tile roof. The Spanish Brigadier Antonio Pareja, commander of the royalist army, spent the night of April 26, 1813, in this building. The events leading up to the battle are therefore also connected to the building that now houses the museum.
The Parroquia Santa Cruz now stands on the site of the community’s first church. The first church was built in 1785, and the settlement of Yerbas Buenas developed around it. The present-day Iglesia Santa Cruz was built in 1943. Its architecture combines traditional rural construction with Art Deco elements. Features include a tower with a cross at its center and a large interior.
Recommended places to visit in Yerbas Buenas include Plaza de Armas, Avenida Centenario with its colonial corridors, Iglesia de la Santa Cruz, and the town’s Medialuna. The avenue is another architectural landmark to help orient yourself in town.
Folklore, Reading, and Community Traditions
The Complejo Cultural Criollo program includes arts education workshops on folkloric traditions, including Cueca championships. At the community level, the Complejo’s summer program includes music concerts, photo exhibitions, film festivals, and literary competitions, among other activities. Check the dates before your trip if you’d like to plan around an event.
The Biblioteca pública Max Jara de Yerbas Buenas is a cultural meeting place and a space for leisurely reading. It offers the public free access to culture, information, knowledge, and recreation. Alongside the historic sites, it represents a place of everyday culture in the community.
At the community level, Rincón Criollo is a communal meeting place where churrascas and rural song come together as cultural expressions. If you’d like to include it in your stay, check in advance to confirm its current operating status.
Also located within the municipality is Casa Familia O’Ryan, one of the municipality’s oldest surviving colonial houses. The house retains its style and furnishings. It offers another perspective on the architectural heritage, without taking away from the history of the plaza or the churches.
The Ruta Cultural Patrimonial de Yerbas Buenas is a municipal tourism initiative that presents the community’s historical, architectural, and cultural heritage as an educational visitor experience. If you’d like to plan a visit, check before your trip whether the route is currently operating.
Highlights for Your Stay
If you’re especially interested in the history of 1813, the plaza and museum offer different points of connection: one is the site of the military camp, while the other is the historic building linked to Antonio Pareja.
