San Clemente combines traditional festivals and local products with nearby places to visit. Plaza de Armas Froilán Silva and the municipal information centre give the town its own cultural focus; outside the urban area, options range from hiking trails to lakes and thermal attractions. When choosing your holiday apartment, consider whether you mainly want to experience the town’s events and markets or focus on outings in the surrounding area.

Festivals and local specialities

The traditional «18 Chico» festival is celebrated in San Clemente for a month. Activities for the whole family include ramadas and fondas, a religious service, a parade and a civic ceremony. Dates and individual programme items may vary; if you are travelling for the festival, check the details for that year’s edition.

The Expo Feria Pehuenche also brings together different aspects of local cultural life. Its programme includes typical food and baked goods, music, dance, handicrafts and traditional games. Details vary from one edition to another. Costumbrista festivals may also offer snow ice: flavoured and served with pieces of banana, sprinkled with toasted flour, and presented on a plate or in small takeaway containers. Availability depends on the festival programme.

The Feria Agrícola in the centre combines agricultural products with handicrafts. Fresh cow’s milk cheese is considered a typical rural product there and may be available seasonally. Visiting hours are listed as Tuesday, Friday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.; check the current schedule in advance. This makes it easier to fit a market visit in with the rest of your plans for the day.

The plaza and getting your bearings in town

Plaza de Armas Froilán Silva is in the urban area and dates back to 1874. It adds a historic landmark in town to the festivals and markets. Anyone interested in the town’s history can combine a visit to the plaza with the Centro de Desarrollo e Informaciones Turísticas.

The information centre is on Avenida Huamachuco, the town’s main street, in a restored former municipal market building. It includes an information room, exhibition spaces, an auditorium and staff on hand to assist visitors. The facility therefore offers more than a single information desk. Since its operating arrangements may change, check the current services before your visit.

Nature destinations and different kinds of outings

Reserva Nacional Altos de Lircay is in the Región del Maule, in the province of Talca and the commune of San Clemente; the access route passes through San Clemente. The reserve is therefore in the vicinity of the town, not within its urban area. The long hiking trails lead to Enladrillado, Laguna El Alto and Mirador Valle del Venado. Trails to Aliwenmahuida, Cerro El Peine, Concones, Mirador del Río and Río Lircay are classified as short routes. This distinction describes the trails, not their level of difficulty. Access and seasonal closures may change; check conditions before setting out on a hike.

For a different kind of outing, consider Lago Colbún: the lake is 45 kilometres from San Clemente, in the direction of the Andes. You can take part in water sports or spend a day at the beach there. Its location and the activities mentioned make the lake an alternative to a day of hiking; local conditions and services may vary.

Baños del Médano is located at kilometre 105 of Ruta Paso Pehuenche in the Andean Cordillera. The area includes thermal waters, natural caves with sulphur-rich vapours said to have healing properties, as well as cabins, camping and picnic areas, and the sale of basic supplies. Before visiting, check which services are currently available. Valle de Los Cóndores offers a different contrast: its basalt cliffs are considered a major destination for sport climbers in South America. Check local conditions and access.

The destinations offer distinctly different experiences: hiking trails are the main attraction in the reserve, water activities at Lago Colbún, and sport climbing at Valle de Los Cóndores. Thermal waters and caves define Baños del Médano. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in San Clemente, choose based on the experiences you want to make time for. The festivals, market and plaza are the focus in town; the reserve, lake, thermal area and climbing destination are separate places to visit nearby.
