Constitución is shaped by impressive coastal rock formations, the Río Maule and a city history that is also reflected in local stories. If you are looking for a holiday destination with nature and cultural discoveries, you will find a range of themes to explore here: from the rocks of Las Rocas de Constitución to historical objects and the distinctive Buscarril.

Las Rocas de Constitución: Coastal Scenery and Birdlife

The Las Rocas de Constitución Nature Sanctuary covers the city’s coastal strip from “Los Gringos” Beach to the mouth of the Río Maule. It covers 108.4 hectares and consists of two areas with distinctive rock formations. Well-known formations include Piedra de las Ventanas, Piedra del León, Piedra del Elefante, Piedra de la Iglesia and Las Termópilas. Their individual names make these unusual rocks easy to identify along the coastal landscape.

Piedra de la Iglesia is about 50 metres high. The sea has eroded caves into the rock, which can be visited at low tide. This note about the tides is important when planning a visit to the caves: visiting them is explicitly subject to low tide. The area was declared a Natural Sanctuary in 2007. For travellers interested in landforms, Las Rocas combines a distinctive natural setting with the area’s protected status.

The rock formations are also nesting sites for various species of gulls, boobies, cormorants and pelicans. Las Rocas is therefore not only a collection of striking rocks, but also a habitat for several seabird species. Those travelling with children can consider the striking formations and birdlife as different starting points for exploring together, without needing to share the same interests.

City History, Legends and Traditions

The Museo Municipal Constitución is housed in the former Ex-Gobernación building, which was built in the 1930s. It displays historical, artistic and archaeological objects donated by local residents. The objects’ origins in the community and their range of themes give the museum a distinct connection to the city: history, art and archaeology sit side by side. It is a fitting stop for anyone who would like to learn about the cultural side of Constitución as well as its coastal scenery.

The Rocas de Constitución have inspired local legends about pirates and shipwrecks. These stories add a traditional, narrative perspective to the view of the rocks. For families, the stories can offer a different way to connect with the landscape than its geological formations or seabird nesting sites. Constitución is also known for its traditional festivities. Together with the Museo Municipal and the legends, they present a picture of a city whose culture extends beyond the objects on display.

Getting to Constitución and Things to Do

Constitución can be reached via the Buscarril Ramal Talca-Constitución. This railway branch is the only one still operating in Chile. For travellers who would like to take a distinctive rail connection into account when planning their journey, the Buscarril offers a direct route to the city. Plaza de Armas is also one of the recommended places to visit. A boat trip on the Río Maule is another recommended experience in Constitución, complementing visits on land with an outing on the river.

When looking for holiday accommodation, Constitución is the shared starting point; the interests mentioned can help you decide what kind of stay you are looking for.

If you would like to discover more destinations, you can also find San Clemente, Rapilermo, Río Claro, Pelarco, Maule and Talca here.
