Torres Del Paine
Accommodation in Torres Del Paine
The Parque Nacional Torres del Paine shapes the natural experience in the area around Torres Del Paine: its landscape includes vast plains, mountains, glaciers, waterfalls, rivers, lakes and lagoons. There are also viewpoints and insights into the park’s history. When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip.
Landscape and nature in the national park
The park also features valleys, ice fields and moraines. The peaks of the Macizo Paine reach a maximum height of 3,050 metres above sea level. In 1978, the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB) declared Parque Nacional Torres del Paine a Biosphere Reserve. The park’s species counts also offer insight into its natural environment: more than 274 plant species have been described there to date, and 126 bird species have been recorded.
Information boards stand at six viewpoints along the road, offering different views of the Macizo Paine, ecosystems and natural attractions. The Circuito Macizo Paine “O” is listed as taking eight to ten days. When weighing up travel plans, you can compare individual sights along the road with a circular route described as taking several days.
Experiences and cultural history
In the national park, ecotourism activities include camping, hiking, mountaineering, boat trips, river descents, glacier crossings and horseback riding. The options range from activities on land to experiences on the water. Which of these you want to focus on is a useful question to consider when planning your trip.
In Villa Monzino, the park’s Centro de Visitantes presents the natural and cultural values of the protected area. The current park administration and visitor centre opened in 1985. Before that, the manor house at Estancia Río Paine served as the first park administration office until 1982; it was destroyed in a fire.
In the associated municipality, the Museo Municipal de Villa Cerro Castillo covers the history of livestock farming, the origins of the first human settlements and palaeontological finds. It is considered a tourist attraction of particular historical, anthropological and palaeontological interest. Nature experiences and cultural history thus offer different ways to shape your trip.
