Futaleufú combines culture in town with viewpoints and experiences on nearby rivers. The options for planning your days vary considerably: taking in the town, going on a moderately strenuous hike, and enjoying a leisurely float are different ways to explore the area. The activities described also offer different focuses for a trip with children.

Culture in Futaleufú

Casa de la Cultura de Futaleufú is a municipal cultural space in town. It offers cultural workshops, exhibitions, discussion groups, and cultural events. Its focus includes local culture, intangible and natural heritage, and traditional crafts, dance, photography, art, and music. Its cultural offerings therefore range from hands-on and community-based activities to various art forms and local traditions.

Rivers and waterside experiences

Two rivers nearby offer different experiences. Leisurely floating is available on the Río Espolón, and is considered suitable for families with children and older people. Check availability with the provider and local river conditions. The Río Espolón rises in Lago Espolón and is a tributary of the Río Futaleufú. There are several beaches along its calm course that are suitable for families; conditions at the beaches may vary.

The Río Futaleufú flows through the commune of Futaleufú and empties into Lago Yelcho. It is used for rafting and kayaking by people from around the world. You can see the river at Puente Gelvez, just over a kilometer from Plaza de Armas. This makes for a contrast between peaceful experiences on the Río Espolón and sporting activities on the Río Futaleufú.

Viewpoints and hikes

Mirador Torre de Agua offers panoramic views of Futaleufú. The access route follows Laguna Espejo and climbs about 300 steps. The hike at Cerro La Bandera offers a different time commitment: it is moderately strenuous, takes about an hour, and offers views of Futaleufú and part of the northwestern valley.

Piedra del Aguila is a natural viewpoint on a moderately strenuous route. From there, you can look out over Laguna Pinto, Lago Leal, and the northwestern valley; the viewpoint is about 2.5 kilometers from town. Closer to town, Puente Espolón is the nearest viewpoint, around 600 meters away. The destinations described thus differ both in their views and in the routes and distances indicated.

Getting there and planning excursions

Access to Reserva Nacional Futaleufú starts in the town of Futaleufú, along a gravel road toward the border crossing of the same name. The route can be difficult in bad weather; check conditions before setting out. The overland route from Chaitén follows Ruta 235 for about 150 kilometers. From Coyhaique, head north along Carretera Austral: the journey covers approximately 422 kilometers and takes about eight hours. Since road conditions and transport services can change, it is advisable to check before departure.

When choosing a vacation rental in Futaleufú, it helps to first decide what kind of pace you want for your trip. Culture and views of the town offer a different focus from river activities and excursions in the surrounding area. Consider which of these experiences you want to shape your days, and tailor your search accordingly.
