Osorno combines a long city history with a palaeontological site in the heart of the present-day urban area. Museums tell the story of the city’s founding and resettlement, display fossils from Pilauco or focus on local history. The city also has distinctive buildings and handicrafts from southern Chile. You can tailor your stay to your particular interests, whether history, architecture, palaeontology or handicrafts.

City History and Palaeontology

The Museo Histórico Municipal de Osorno was founded on 18 October 1946 at the initiative of Víctor Sánchez Aguilera, who was the director of the Liceo de Hombres de Osorno. The museum is housed in a building dating from 1929: its exterior façade is made of concrete, while the interior features fine woods. The founding date and the building’s history provide two distinct time markers for your visit.

The Museo Fuerte Reina Luisa presents the history of Osorno from the city’s founding on 27 March 1558 to the consolidation of its resettlement in 1808. The account also recognises the role of the Mapuche-Huilliche people. Those wishing to learn more about the city’s development and the different historical perspectives will find a dedicated focus here.

Another glimpse into the past awaits at Pilauco. The palaeontological site lies in the present-day Los Notros neighbourhood, in the heart of Osorno, and dates back more than 12,000 years. The Museo Pleistocénico Osorno exhibits fossils dated to 15,000 years old and found at the Pilauco excavation site. Its exhibition includes dioramas, replicas, interactive displays and representative fossils from the excavations to date. Parque Chuyaca is the starting point for a walk to the Pilauco excavation site accompanied by a specialist guide.

Buildings and Local Handicrafts

Wooden houses dating from the late 19th century stand along Avenida Juan Mackenna. They bear witness to German immigration and are the only buildings in Osorno designated as national historic monuments. Catedral San Mateo offers a different architectural accent: it is designed in the Neo-Gothic pointed-arch style and features mosaics, a 42-metre-high tower and a copper roof.

Pueblito Artesanal, the Centro de Artesanía Local, is another place to visit for those interested in regional handicrafts. Handcrafted works made using traditional methods and typical materials from southern Chile, such as leather, wool and wood, are sold there. The Museo Interactivo de Osorno, meanwhile, is housed in a modern railway station building inaugurated in 1964.

Getting There and Choosing Where to Stay

For air travel, the location of the airport terminal is a useful point of reference: it is 7 kilometres from the centre of Osorno. Aeródromo Cañal Bajo de Osorno (ZOS) offers direct flights from Santiago, with a flight time of 1 hour and 45 minutes. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Osorno, you can base your choice on the themes you want to shape your stay: city history and buildings, handicrafts, or the palaeontology around Pilauco. Parque Chuyaca is also the stated starting point for the guided walk to the site.

Other places for reference: Purranque, Puyehue, Puerto Octay and Río Negro.
