Nueva Imperial: River Landscapes and City History
Accommodation in Nueva Imperial
In Nueva Imperial, glimpses of the city’s history meet riverside spots along the Río Chol Chol and a range of ways to enjoy the outdoors. The Puente Ferroviario Río Chol Chol is a particularly striking landmark. When planning a trip, you can consider culture, the river and parks as different focuses for your stay.
The Railway Bridge and the City’s History
The Puente Ferroviario Río Chol Chol was built in Nueva Imperial in 1909, crossing the Río Cholchol as part of the Nueva Imperial–Carahue railway line. Its riveted metal truss construction is a distinctive feature of the structure. The bridge was built by the French company Schneider et Creusot. As a National Monument of historical significance, it holds a special place in the city’s history.
For residents, the bridge is an element of local identity and a living testament to Nueva Imperial’s economic heyday. The former Cancha de Carrera Thiers, also known as Cancha de Carrera Coilaco, tells another part of the area’s past. From the late 19th century until the mid-1990s, it was an important social and recreational gathering place. This historical role belongs to its past and should be distinguished from the city’s current leisure venues.
Green Spaces, Sports and Water
Parque Thiers covers approximately 45,000 square metres. Its facilities include a paved cycle path, parking, sports courts, a football pitch, children’s play areas and landscaped green spaces. The park therefore offers a range of activities: cycling, sports and spending time in green surroundings. If you are also considering play areas or opportunities to exercise when planning your trip, you can take these specific amenities into account when weighing up your interests.
At the Río Chol Chol, the Cendyr Náutico offers another glimpse into the city’s relationship with the water. A small floating dock provides access to the river. The Cendyr Náutico is also the municipality of Nueva Imperial’s main facility for canoeing, where canoeists and kayakers receive training and preparation. The annual Noche Imperialina includes a floating stage and a boat parade on the Río Chol Chol. This event brings the river together with a special cultural experience in the city.
Architecture and Cultural Venues
Individual buildings also display a range of architectural features. Casa Francesa is a two-storey brick building with an uninterrupted façade and neoclassical influences. Molino Nieves, also known as Molino Farandato, was founded in 1908, features a local neoclassical style and continues to operate today under the name “La Espiga”. As you explore Nueva Imperial, these buildings offer specific points of reference for discovering different forms of the city’s architecture.
Parque Borde Río, also known as Parque de Las Esculturas, is located at the end of Calle Pinto, next to the Gimnasio Olímpico. From there, you can look out over the Puente Ferroviario and the Río Chol Chol. If you are particularly interested in this combination of river and historic structure, this is a good spot to view both. The Centro Cultural Municipal is housed in a centrally located building at 309 Arturo Prat Street. It provides a public space open to people interested in artistic activities.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Nueva Imperial, you can consider what you would like your stay to focus on: city history and architecture, recreation at Parque Thiers, canoeing and the river, or an interest in artistic activities. The places and themes described offer different points of connection, without needing to be combined into a single walking tour.
