Chile Chico: Culture, Traditions and Views
Accommodation in Chile Chico
Chile Chico has a variety of discoveries in store: at the Museo de Chile Chico, explore archaeological and natural history topics, while its squares and streets offer insights into local life and history. There are also rock paintings in the commune and the Jeinimeni sector of Parque Nacional Patagonia. When choosing your holiday rental, you can consider whether you mainly want to explore the town’s culture or also plan excursions in the surrounding area.
Culture in town: museum, plaza and old adobe buildings
Casa de la Cultura de Chile Chico houses the Museo de Chile Chico, an auditorium and a multipurpose room. The museum’s collection includes fossilized wood, skulls of native animals, human remains, worked and polished stones, and hunting tools used by ancient hunter-gatherer communities. These communities lived on the southern shore of Lago General Carrera. The collection therefore offers several topics to explore during your visit: the area’s natural history as well as traces of earlier ways of life.
Plaza de Chile Chico is a public square in the town, two blocks south of Lago General Carrera. The annual Fiesta de la Cosecha Comunitaria is held here. The festival celebrates and harvests cherries and apricots. If you are interested in local traditions and produce, the festival complements the museum’s exhibits with a community event. The Festival de la Voz Chile Chico is also a gathering place for the community and visitors during the summer season.
Calle Simón Bolívar, locally also known as “Calle del Piojo,” offers another perspective on the town’s history. Some of Chile Chico’s oldest adobe buildings stand there, with shingle roofs; only a few have been preserved in their original condition. As you explore the street, it is worth keeping this distinction in mind: the historic buildings are part of the town’s history, but only a few still retain their original condition.
Rock paintings, views and routes into the surrounding area
Rock paintings and other traces of Tehuelche culture can be found throughout the commune of Chile Chico. The Tehuelche culture inhabited the area around 5,000 years ago. These traces can be seen in caves, beneath rock overhangs, in stone houses and on rock walls, and are considered evidence of the region’s earliest human settlement. For a trip planned around an interest in history, they broaden the focus beyond the town center to include different forms of early settlement.
In Chile Chico, Plaza del Viento is located on Cerro de las Banderas. This viewpoint offers views over the town and Lago General Carrera. It gives you a different perspective on the area than its streets and public squares: the town and lake are seen together. If you would also like to visit the Jeinimeni sector of Parque Nacional Patagonia, you can reach it from Chile Chico via Route X-753. Lago Jeinimeni is approximately 65 kilometers away.
A cycling tour through the streets of Chile Chico is also offered as a tourist experience. This gives you a range of interests to consider when planning your trip: local history and the museum, a festival celebrating cherries and apricots, a viewpoint, rock paintings in the commune and a bike tour through the streets. Which of these you prioritize can help you decide how to spend your days in Chile Chico.
Getting there and choosing a base
Chile Chico is connected by the Carretera Austral and side roads along Lago General Carrera. The La Tehuelche ferry also operates between Chile Chico and Puerto Ibáñez. These routes are useful reference points when considering both how to get there and which places to visit on your trip. When choosing a holiday rental, it may therefore be helpful to first decide what matters most to you: the cultural attractions and squares in Chile Chico, or also the Jeinimeni sector with Lago Jeinimeni, approximately 65 kilometers away.
If you would like to explore other destinations, you can also find Río Ibáñez and Puerto Guadal here.
