Maçambara combines a distinct town center with a history that dates back to the settlement’s founding. In the city center, Praça Alberi Jovino Foletto lies in front of the town hall; it is a gathering place for the community. Alongside the central square, historical sites and protected wetlands are among the municipality’s defining features.

Square and Settlement History

Praça Alberi Jovino Foletto is a gathering place for the community and was formerly called Praça 22 de Outubro. In front of the town hall stands a statue by artist Mano Lima, who was born in the locality of Bororé. For families looking for historical points of interest to explore together, the square is a tangible starting point: the monument, town hall, and former name of the square can all be connected at one clearly identified location.

The settlement of Maçambará was founded in 1910 by cattle ranchers from Uruguay. Fazenda Recreio is also part of the story behind the name: it gave the settlement its name. The founding and the naming are two distinct points of reference—one tells when and by whom the settlement was established, while the other explains the origin of its name. The town’s history thus takes shape through specific connections to people and places, rather than through a general description of the region.

Historical Sites in the Municipality

Recreio railway station opened in 1913 and was renamed Maçambará in the 1940s. The building was constructed from exposed stone masonry. Another historical point of interest is in the town of Santo Isidro: an old house where Osvaldo Aranha was born. The railway station and the house connect the municipality’s history to different subjects—the development of the railway station and a biographical connection. The two early dates are only three years apart: the settlement was founded before the railway station opened; the station was not renamed until decades later.

The Reserva Biológica do São Donato is also part of the municipality of Maçambará; it is also located in the municipality of Itaqui. The protected area preserves wetlands in western Rio Grande do Sul and includes the area known as Banhado São Donato. The reserve is not open to visitors; research is possible only by prior arrangement. It is therefore an important part of the region’s landscape and ecological context, but not a public tourist attraction.

Choose the Right Local Connection

When planning your trip, it makes a difference whether you are primarily interested in the central square or in the municipality’s historical and landscape connections. These features are not necessarily all found in the same place. The central square tells the story of the town, while other historical sites and the protected area reveal different aspects of the municipality.
