Azorean-colonial houses, the Jacuí River and a vibrant cultural life shape São Jerônimo. The river is considered the city’s main attraction and offers beaches for residents and visitors. History and local culture are also part of the town’s character. If you’re looking for a holiday rental, you can consider whether you’d rather explore architecture and events or discover riverside scenery and rural nature.

Colonial Houses and Casa de Cultura

Azorean-colonial houses are part of the city’s historical heritage and can still be seen throughout São Jerônimo. Some are well preserved. Eira and Beira are among the distinctive features of these buildings, giving the architecture its own character. If you’re interested in architectural history, you can look out for these houses as you explore the town, rather than focusing only on individual attractions.

One of the colonial houses was converted into the Casa de Cultura. Among other things, it hosts workshops and handicraft activities that promote local production. The Casa de Cultura is therefore connected not only to the architectural heritage, but also to craft and cultural activities. For travelers interested in local culture, this connection complements an exploration of the historic houses.

The Jacuí River and Rural Nature

A river beach lies on the banks of the Jacuí River near São Jerônimo’s main center. It is within the permanently protected environmental strip along the riverbank. The river is therefore both part of the cityscape and a destination in its own right for visitors interested in waterside scenery.

There are also natural attractions beyond the main center: São Jerônimo has rural areas with numerous springs. In the locality of Quitéria, adventurous visitors can explore waterfalls. These examples offer different points of reference for planning a trip: the river beach, the springs in the rural area and the waterfalls in Quitéria each offer distinct nature experiences. When choosing your holiday rental, your interest in the town’s history, the river or the rural surroundings can help shape the kind of stay you’re looking for.

Cultural Events and Local Traditions

The Gincana Cultural de São Jerônimo began in 1983 and is held in September. It brings the whole city to life. As part of the Gincana, the Show das Equipes brings together dance and theater. Alongside the historical heritage, this cultural event also takes center stage, combining different performing arts.

Another cultural highlight was the 6th Festival de Artes Cênicas de São Jerônimo, which brought together theater and dance performances produced by the local community. The festival was preceded by free workshops open to the public. Topics ranged from dance and theater to scenography, costume design, makeup and scriptwriting. São Jerônimo also hosted a carnival from 1927 until around the mid-1980s, which many considered the largest in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
