Arroio do Sal – Beach, Nature and History
Accommodation in Arroio do Sal
Arroio do Sal offers beach activities, outdoor recreation and a history linked to fishing and salt production. Along Avenida Beira-Mar, you can cycle on the promenade, go inline skating, take a walk or go running. The municipality also offers trails and opportunities to observe nature. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider whether the beach, nature or local history should be the focus of your trip.
Exercise along the promenade and beach
The promenade along Avenida Beira-Mar offers various ways to exercise outdoors: holidaymakers cycle and go inline skating there, take walks or go running. Depending on your plans for the day, you can choose between a ride, a walk and a run. The beach has areas for futevôlei, beach volleyball, beach tennis, beach soccer and Beach Câmbio. This volleyball variant is adapted for people over 50. This gives you several sports to choose from on beach days, while the promenade offers a different setting for exercise.
Trails and nature in the municipality
Tupancy Ecological Park has two main trails: the trail to Lagoa de Banho and the Coronilha Trail. Each takes about 30 minutes. These are two clearly named options for an outing, and their approximate duration can help you plan your day. Tupancy Municipal Natural Park is open Tuesday through Saturday. It has a bird observatory where, with patience and quiet, you can watch waterhens and jacanas. If you want to observe nature here, plan to allow enough time and enjoy some quiet.
Lagoa Itapeva is also one of the municipality’s natural attractions and has calm waters. Visitors can access the lagoon through private properties to launch boats, jet skis and inflatable boats. This is a different way to spend time by the water than birdwatching or walking the trails in Tupancy. When planning your holiday, you can consider these different interests separately, without combining them into a single outing.
Fishing, local history and landmarks
The name Arroio do Sal is associated with fishermen who boiled seawater beside a stream running through the dunes. In this way, they produced salt to preserve fish and shellfish. Around 1944, Arroio do Sal’s first wooden hut was built on the bank of the stream. It was made of wood and had a Santa Fé-style roof. These two stories tell of a time when fishing and the use of salt were part of local life.
The first Festa do Pescador was held in 1995 to celebrate the rich catches of the “Marisqueiros”—the name given to the people of Arroio do Sal. The Pedal da Emancipação cycling event was planned for the city’s anniversary. Praça do Mar was to be the starting point, and the route was to follow Avenida Assis Brasil to the entrance gateway. These details describe a planned route for the cycling event, not a recurring date.
There are several archaeological sambaqui sites in the municipality of Arroio do Sal. The most significant is the Balneário Marambaia site. In the city, Farol de Arroio do Sal is considered one of the most important landmarks and tourist destinations. Arroio do Sal is also one of the listed cities on the Caminho dos Vales e das Águas tourist route. These cultural and local histories add further points of interest to your trip, alongside the active options on the beach and nature experiences in the municipality.
