Discover Jurema: Landscape, Culture and Festivals
Accommodation in Jurema
Jurema combines a distinctive founding story with arts projects and festival traditions. The landscape is part of this picture too: to the west, the view opens onto distant mountain ranges and a blue horizon. Those interested in local history, cultural education or events will find various ways to connect with the place during a stay.
Local History and Landscape
A chapel features in the story of Jurema’s founding. It was built on a rock beside the founder’s home. Later, it was officially placed under the patronage of Nossa Senhora da Conceição. The parish of Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Jurema was established by Decree No. 12 on 3 December 1923. The story of the town’s beginnings thus sits alongside a precisely dated chapter in the parish’s history.
Jurema’s surroundings are also an extensive Agreste plateau between the Caatinga and the forest swamps at the foot of the Serra dos Caboclos. Together with the westward view of distant mountains, these landscape features shape the traditional description of the town. They give Jurema a different focus from a trip devoted solely to events: stories about the landscape and the town’s origins are also part of the travel experience here.
Artistic Insights at the Centro Cultural
The Centro Cultural de Jurema is located on Rua José Inácio Sobrinho in the former Moto Sport building. There, the Cultura em Movimento project offers classes in theatre, music, dance and audiovisual production. These different disciplines offer varied perspectives on artistic practice, from movement and performance to sound and audiovisual design.
The project gives children, young people and adults in the Município Jurema access to artistic and cultural education. The educational work described is therefore aimed at several age groups and represents a distinct cultural aspect of Jurema. Travellers with a particular interest in culture may want to consider the Centro Cultural as part of the town’s character; the subjects taught there give an idea of the forms that come together at the centre.
Festivals and Local Traditions
Jurema’s June festivals include São João da Jurema. In 2025, it was held under the motto “Hands that sew, hands that care” and honoured local seamstresses. The motto puts craftsmanship and care at the centre of the celebration; the event also offers a glimpse of a local tribute that drew attention to women’s work beyond the festivities themselves.
The Festival de Quadrilhas Matutas reached its tenth edition in 2025. The June festivals and the quadrilha festival represent different facets of local festival culture. While São João honoured local seamstresses with its 2025 motto, the festival’s tenth edition marked a milestone in its development. Motocross da Emancipação takes place every year during the celebrations marking the political emancipation of Jurema-PE. A 30th motocross event also took place in Jurema-PE.
In the associated municipality, the city government holds Queimadrilha every year in the Distrito de Santo Antônio das Queimadas. The Arrasta-pé block brings together Forró and Arrasta-pé. Alongside the June festivals, these are other named dance and music forms in the municipality’s festival calendar; they should not be conflated with events in Jurema.
A Sporting Event from 2025
The 1st Jurema Run was a 5 km road race held on 14 September 2025 in Jurema-PE. The start and finish were on Rua do Trevo at the town entrance. The distance and named start and finish point make the race a tangible sporting event; at the same time, it remains an event from 2025. When choosing a holiday rental in Jurema, you can therefore first consider whether you would like to discover the town mainly through its history, cultural project, or festivals and sporting events.
